I think the Democrats need to understand that they cannot save the government from Trump. They can only choose not to be an ally of evil. They cannot say to themselves, "we will forfeit our constitutional authority to prevent further loss," because that will only lead to further loss.
They believe a shutdown would make it easier for Trump to slash essential services.
