I have limited my posts on social media because I no longer believe these platforms are for the public good, and I know no one really gives a flying eff what I think about anything, particularly politics. That said, I am writing a dissertation and have spent the last three years researching generative & agentic AI and the companies building it (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta, GitLab, Adobe, Salesforce, etc.). I spend a ridiculous amount of time in tech academic literature funded by these companies, but the academic publishing cycle is about 18-months behind industry, so I also gather a lot of information from tech podcasts and written columns by reputable journalists. Silicon Valley billionaires have been displeased that government regulations and data privacy laws designed to protect Americans limit their reach and slow down innovation, and covid-era shutdowns were a catalyst that radicalized many formerly centrist (or left-leaning) tech billionaires to Peter Theil’s anti-democratic ideology. These billionaires identified a useful financially and morally bankrupt political idiot to use a their CEO-in-Chief and pumped millions of dollars into social media in 2024 to flood the feeds of those camping out in the anti-woke algorithm (i.e.: the Fox News and Joe Rogan target audience) on social channels from reddit to tiktok to the lesser-known extremist platforms to ensure he was elected. Based on their social media feeds, right-leaning voters went to the ballot box in November believing that inflation was something the president could control (obviously not the result of corporate profiteering, corporate consolidation in ag/processed foods, and bird flu), and the biggest risks to our freedom & happiness were trans kids in sports and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in workplaces and schools. A reminder friends, from your local chaplain, that we live in a culture obsessed with positivity. There will be a lot of pressure on you to find reasons to be hopeful. Those reasons probably do exist, but looking for them now may not be the healthy choice. Lament and despair are human emotions. They are necessary, and they must be metabolized, which can only be done by feeling them. Ritual, humor, screaming, crying, moving your body, these are all healthy ways to feel the emotions. Let yourself have a few bad days, it will make the hope more secure when it comes. Hope has to be allowed to blossom, it won't stick if it's forced.
