There's perhaps no better way to celebrate the Christmas octave than to tap into Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work & Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
Kwanzaa is almost here, and Catholic institutions around the country will celebrate events promoting the "Nguzo Saba" (Seven Principles) of the weeklong commemoration from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.

Residents in mid-Atlantic states like Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania who have spent the last few years plagued by high electricity bills just got some bad news: Relief is not on the way.

There’s just not enough electricity to meet rising demand. https://cnn.it/4ja4CAR

And please also, AGAIN, never forget that they are inherently unethical to use because no one gave permission for their research or writing to be used in it. It is all stolen, and if you're using the plagiarism machine, please keep that in mind.
My friends, I say this with all the love in my heart: Right now might not be the moment for “But we should be TOLERANT and NUANCED about the plagiarism machines!”

Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.

The propagandists who started the backlash to the 1619 project and critical race theory admitted they were lying to achieve segregationist goals. Calling the movement that resulted a moral panic is accurate.

I'm sorry you got taken by hucksters, but that's on you.
"Moral panic"? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

a big part of the issue surrounding the use of chatgpt/LLMs in academic research comes down to process vs. product. a lot of us know that the process of doing research matters because that's where intellectual work is done; but some "academics" and lots of techies only care about a fast product

I’m not a boxing fan but a steady stream of the world’s worst men getting knocked out makes a strong case for the sport. If they can promise to keep it going I’ll get on board (and have some recommendations).

Necrocapitalism getting more ghoulish and literal by the day.
“Rather than relying on an implant or a patient's own body fat to add volume to hips or augment breasts, alloClae — which can cost as much as $100,000 per procedure — uses donor fat from a cadaver as a first-of-its-kind body filler.”
Corporate types are clamoring for a new kind of plastic surgery — using dead people's fat
Corporate types are waiting weeks for — and spending big on — alloClae, which cuts out the recovery time typically associated with body enhancements.

Given the discourse, I’m reminded of this classic paper that’s still influential among sociologists of race and ethnicity.

It argues that prejudice arises from a relative sense of “group position” when one group believes resources are their perogative.

Jobs are the paradigmatic example.

What a world to go to bed thinking about one mass shooting and wake up to news of another, a targeted hate crime, at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney. And also in the video where an actual hero, Ahmed al Ahmed chooses not to kill one of the terrorists.

One of the frustrating trends in our current moment is folks lying to our faces about what they are doing — in this case, stifling student speech by gutting publications—and claiming otherwise. It's insulting.

As @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social keeps saying, there should be sanctions for public lying.

Because at the end of the day so many are only pseudo-outraged and their concerns on media/social media follow the herd. Many are more interested in likes/engagement than their values. We saw this in 2020 and it’s even more glaring now. Also it’s capitalism 101: villain to victor trajectories.
Years ago, my colleagues at Business Insider and I tracked YouTuber “cancellation” arcs. What we found is that for many entertainers, “cancellation” actually sets the stage for a redemption arc, one that can raise their profile higher than ever. It wasn’t career-ending. It was fuel.

The question is not if, but it’s how ill are these chemicals going to make us, our disabled and immunocompromised folks, our elderly, our children in the womb, and our future children?
This is critical information we need to know right now.

The EPA is starting to allow the use of pesticides containing PFAS on food.

The move is part of an effort to roll back the regulation of what are called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down easily in the environment.
