Yesterday, CERN alumni, staff and children participated in the Relay Race #AtCERN – an event organised by the Running club and the Staff Association, which has become an annual tradition.

The fastest runners and the most creative costumes were awarded during the festivities.

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

Here we see scientists working on new collimators – special devices installed close to the beam to clean it of stray particles before they come close to the collision regions.

#FunFact: more than a hundred collimators are placed around the LHC.

The High-Luminosity LHC (#HiLumiLHC) will be the successor of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, due to start after 2030. It will deliver a higher number of particle collisions to the experiments, thus increasing the chances of new observations.

It's #Saturn ring-plane crossing day! A once in a 13-15 yr event when Saturn's rings are edge on, as viewed from Earth, making them appear to disappear! I'm so infuriated that the Sun is in the way meaning no-one will see it! 😡 We'll just have to imagine it 😞

The news has been more than a bit grim of late, so hooray for @carbonbrief.org providing some genuine and really meaningful **good** news: the UK's carbon emissions in 2024 were the lowest since 1872, because demand for fossil fuels just keeps decreasing.

For anyone wondering why the Lovell Telescope has been parked pointing at the zenith for a while, we are changing a wheel. They're made of steel and very occasionally crack - first failure we had was 2007, after 50 years of operation!

Ever wondered what it feels like to be in the heart of a #particle #accelerator? ⚛️
This week, my boss Andy got as close as it gets! Here he is, inside the accelerator tank at Dalton Cumbrian Facility, replacing the inner generator to keep our Pelletron accelerator running at peak performance. 💪
Inside a larger vacuum vessel, resembling a tunnel, a technician is working. He's wearing a safety harness, head torch and nitrile gloves for some delicate work. He lies on his back and reaches up to adjust the inner parts of a particle accelerator that loom over him; the accelerator inner tubes, although made from a substantial amount of metal, appear to be floating above him in mid air.
