It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Antonino Zichichi.

A pioneer of CERN’s experimental programme in the 1950s and the driving force behind numerous experiments, he was one of the most influential figures in high-energy physics.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Here we see the gold and copper coating of beam position monitors (BPMs) for the #HiLumiLHC upgrade.

Each BPM undergoes a multi-step electroplating process, beginning with a thin gold strike to ensure proper adhesion of the 100-micron-thick copper layer.

#ThrowbackThursday to January 1963 ⛄

With stalactites of ice on roofs, white parking lots and snowy gardens, CERN’s main site in Meyrin, Switzerland turned into a true winter wonderland that year.

Are you spending this winter surrounded by snow?

#ThrowbackThursday to February 1963 🔎

Here we see CERN’s “scanning people” using the IEP apparatus to scan and measure track-chamber photographs.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, the Laboratory relied on these experts to visually inspect enormous quantities of film produced by particle detectors.
