"The way we are being instructed to look at these events, by our political and media establishment, is that peace, however imperfect, is better than war, and there is glory in the pragmatism that delivers it."

Bullshit in three ways, suggests @marquelawyers.com.au

The chorus of people congratulating buffoon Trump on Gaza peace deal are wrong, and here's why
Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan relies on ahistorical nonsense imposed on the Palestinian people, who are told they should be grateful. He deserves no applause.

The Shadow Finder: amazing tech from @bellingcat.com
Galen and our wider tech team have built many tools that are now regularly used by Bellingcat researchers and other newsrooms. One such tool is the Shadow Finder tool, built alongside @gaborfriesen.bsky.social , that @georainbolt.bsky.social tested out last year. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQIj...

Melbourne by night—wonderful. I’d forgotten! I rarely go into the CBD at night, but had to attend a special concert.

Peter Dutton criticises Welcome to Country ceremonies that he claims are held ‘Before every work meeting’?! No, Peter Dutton, that would be ‘Acknowledgment of Country’, which is very different and takes usually about 10 seconds. How embarrassing that he doesn’t know the difference.

International students are perhaps the most unfairly attacked demographic in all of Australia. We invite them here. The reason they come is to get an education. Most are incredibly nice people who benefit our country in all sorts of ways. They massively cross-subsidise domestic students.
Utterly moronic decision-making by BOTH duopoly parties - sacrificing the hugely important education sector when it should be thriving, all because they’re incapable of tough decisions on real estate investment rorts.
Cutting students is not the solution to housing.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Prescient line I just saw from the Dynasty series reboot, dated way back in 2021–series 4, ep 14, Korosh to Jeff Colby: “Someone needs to shut Elon Musk up”. Any further comment from me would be superfluous.

This is what I’m trying to tell students…
Alternatively, if you're going to use AI for a literature review: don't.

Not only does using it waste everyone else's time and resources, it defeats the entire purpose of conducting a review.
If you leverage AI in literature review, CHECK THOSE REFERENCES. I just finished reading through a proposal on a topic that I knew well, and thus was surprised to see several papers referenced that I hadn't known of. Then when I looked them up online, I found they didn't exist. 7 fake references.

What can you do?

Don’t give up hope. Dictators feed off your hopelessness.

Don’t quit. Dictators want you to give up.

Punch back. Dictators are bullies, and bullies are cowards.

Stay tethered to the truth. Dictators need you to believe their lies.

Resist. Stand with others.

This: Geoffrey Robertson is spot-on in his piece about the absurdity of the inflated and wrongly escalated Kerr case.
Good to have, Geoffrey Robertson KC weigh in on this one ... as I have been thinking too.

All the way with Adam Bandt! Meanwhile, Trump gets money for jam from Australia, and he doesn’t care about the outcome because he’ll be long gone by the time any submarines eventuate. #technofeudalism in action.
Adam Bandt making the shockingly radical left-wing point that perhaps paying the United States $US500m for AUKUS this week does not appear to be very good value

Excellent—I love this! Suits are indeed stupid (even though I admit to wearing one sometimes, but no one should have to).
We have a formal family wedding on Friday. Mr. Husband doesn't own a siut nor desires to wear one. We asked if he could forgo the suit and gift the money towards the honeymoon instead. They accepted. Suits are stupid. Holidays are much better.

More horror from the US. This is no longer the amazing place where I went to school many years ago. (Literally, as also I lived in Pacific Palisades back then, and the house, street, village, school I remember so fondly were destroyed in the recent fires—speaking of ‘climate’). 😥
I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky
Just received an email saying that it's not advisable to include the following words in future applications for research funding to the US DOT. Here we are.
