As someone who works in pharma: no. It won’t bring the manufacturing back.

It will just make our insurance premiums skyrocket.

It’s too expensive to move and validate those factories. It’s not like setting up a metal stamping shop.

Oof - great thread:
Unfortunately this situation produces a certain type of grifter - let's call them toxic generalists - who relies on this complexity to wheel and deal their way through systems.

The toxic generalist only needs to know a little more than nothing to pass as an expert. That's where AI comes in.
I find “people don’t actually know how things work” has a lot of explanatory power.

I don’t mean this in a holier-than-thou way. I’m only vaguely aware of how my microwave or the car radio work. A lot of modern life is assuming the functioning of complex tech and models.

I helped build a government AI system. DOGE fired me, rolled the AI out to the whole agency, and implied the AI can do my job and the jobs of the others they've fired.

It can't. But, what DOGE accidentally revealed about themselves in the process is fascinating. 🧵

Absolutely what I thought when I first heard of this.
Chuck Schumer only the latest in a long line of people to fail as a result of shitty user personas

In my area, there is another spectrum of winter birding - loner vs. massive horde. A (terrible, sorry) pic from today shows both ends - note the crowd of Canada geese on the opposite shore from the bald eagle:

Of all my photos, this is easily my favourite I've ever taken. This amphipod is legitimately about 1mm in size. So small your eyes can't make out any details on it. They refuse to sit still. They run away from the light. It just looks like a grain of sand.

Genuinely a 1 in a million shot.

A BlueSky Thread.

I wanted to say as both a #photographer and someone who seasonally works for the national park service.

I believe there is value in photographing many beautiful places in the world, but I believe it’s important to not share online the exact location of those special places. (1/6)

This is tangential to that but this also reminds me of the people that say “women are just using abortion as a form of birth control.” The tie in here is that young women are being seen as sluts and the related idea that if bad things happen to them, they deserved it. It’s awful.
