This is why OpenAI is selling so aggressively to education at all levels—they want to create entire generations of users incapable of reading, writing and thinking without ChatGPT to hold their hands

And teachers and professors should call this out for what it actually is
To bear out this rosy projection, HSBC assumes that OpenAI will become "as ubiquitous [...] as Microsoft 365" (345mm users worldwide) while bringing in 10x the number of users (3bn).

Always kinda blows my mind that Kwik Trip, of all evil oil and gas companies, has this genius UX design element on their pumps, a mute button for the screen blaring ads. Wisconsin can be proud of this, at the very least.

"We are asking the UW Board of Regents to stand up for students' right to learn and the faculty's right to teach, both of which are intertwined with democracy itself," writes Neil Kraus, AFT-Wisconsin VP of Higher Education.
The shady tactics shaping policy in the UW System
Unwritten "political deals," perpetual audit threats, and fear are being used to reduce educational opportunities outside of UW–Madison and UW–Milwaukee.

The things one sees when walking one's dog along Lake Michigan.

I wouldn't be enthusiastic about being out in open water in this thing, even if it wasn't currently swamped on the beach.

It would probably also make a good album cover for some sad bastard inde folk band…

Question for graphic, interaction, web & app #design professionals/instructors.

Do you think it's relevant to teach undergrads #HTML, #CSS, and #JavaScript in today's world of #Figma and other popular prototyping tools?

Not sure what kind of response I'll get, but I am genuinely curious.

I had the fawaffle at the MN State Fair. It was good, lots of potential, but I think demand kinda outstripped quality on the production side of things.

teachers!

excited to share a new website at this late date of Aug 15 to try to help us collectively prepare for back to school in the interpretative humanities classroom assaulted by the AI grift, so we don't have to go it alone.

Took a ride through rural northern WI today and had flashbacks galore from @jeffsharlet.bsky.social's Wisconsin Death Trip redux from a few years ago. Essential reading:

“Fuck Biden,” “Don’t Tread on Me,” and a Wisconsin Death Trip for Our Times
The author knocks on the doors bearing the darkest symbols, behind which lie guns, ammo, antisemitism, antiabortion dogma—and a belief in the coming civil war.

Product Design Studio, it was such a great overview and chance to practice how ideas for products, services, and really any creative endeavor are developed and refined. Excellent balance of theory and practice.
What was your favorite early clas NOT in your eventual major. Mine was Ethnomusicology: an introduction to folk music.
I invariably get, "Ooh anthro that was my favorite class/cool professor" from people I meet. I tend to think soms of it is our outré material, being willing to talk "taboo" subjects in a cross-cultural context.

Ironically MY favorite class was probably Geology 101...

I tell people this kind of shape-as-letter thing rarely works well. Jeer? Gun-ee-gun? Lazy stuff.

I think LLMs are appealing to a certain set of people who think they're entitled to be good at something without wanting to actually put in any work

mostly, it seems people who think the disciplines of the Humanites aren't "real" and so just any rube can do it. Chris Arnade, basically

1000x this
I can support you, I can help you, I can try and work with you flexibly if needed. But what I can't do is care more about your education than you do.

Just checked some old reliable links that I use to supplement my instruction on information architecture in web design. The dot gov ones, more broadly addressing accessibility and designing for disability accommodations, are all gone. Thanks for making the internet even worse, nu-techbro overlords!
