Now that it seems many independent federal agencies will rapidly go the way of the dodo bird, I am wondering what might be good alternative approaches to protecting ordinary US citizens from such pernicious and often complex wrongs as unfair credit card and banking practices or dangerous products.

There's been a lot of justified rage about what comes from the mouths of Trump and his minions. I share it. In the event that it is useful, here is a readable description of what speech is and is not protected by the First Amendment from a source I consider credible.

In the last 5 years, 81 people have been killed by political violence in the US. Right-wing terrorists account for over half of those murders, some 54%, according to research by the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. Islamists account for 21%, and left-wingers for 22%.

Every time I wish the current president, for whom I have nothing but contempt, would just go away, I remember that his successor is just as much in the thrall of the autocrats who are decimating individual rights and freedoms behind the scenes.
