Serious question: why is it that every person over 60 that I meet for the first time will call me Kate, despite my introduction as Catie and no one else in their proximity saying "Kate"??

People develop their beliefs for a reason, and it’s not facts alone. It’s a personal connection to a subject. Whether that’s through first-hand experience or someone they trust espousing a particular view, research can’t override our social experience of information.
This is why I switched to “and why is it bad to be autistic” with anti-vaxxers. It doesn’t work to site statistics at them, because they’re not actually worried about vaccines, it’s just ableism. And not everyone can be talked out of ableism, but a lot of people *can* if you make them think about it
I've been reading a book about how to actually change people's minds about various divisive issues. As we know, that doesn't mean telling facts (expositing facts just makes them dig in harder). Instead, you invite them to think about WHY they hold those views. a.co/d/izez2xa

International students are huge assets to the University of Minnesota. They move thousands of miles away from their families and support systems to learn from the best and the brightest.
I can’t imagine how terrified they are after learning ICE has detained one of their classmates.

This week, my Somerville constituent Rümeysa Öztürk was abducted in broad daylight by DHS officials and sent to Louisiana to be locked in a detention center. She has not been charged with any crime.
