NEWS: At-Large Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie says he will be resigning from the D.C. Council on January 5, 2026. That's in preparation for his run for mayor, since he will be changing his party affiliation to Democrat and he's currently in an At-Large seat reserved for non-Democrats.

Also because he didn't have a chance in hell. George, Allen, R. White, Henderson, and Nadeau would have sunk the bill (not to mention likely no votes by Pinto, Frumin, and Parker)
Update: Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder withdrew his bill that would have delayed ranked-choice voting in D.C., mostly over procedural concerns with his bill. Emergency legislation can't carry a cost, and there were arguments that Felder's bill would cost the elections board money.

Update: Who needs a referendum when you can just do another ballot initiative? The same group that put Initiative 82 on the ballot created a campaign committee for a new ballot initiative this week. The fight over the tipped wage in D.C. may well continue.

Now, it's worth recalling that during the budget process this summer Bonds and Felder unsuccessfully tried to delay ranked-choice voting. But with today's hearing they may have some ammunition to try again. If they will, it would have to be next month or January at the latest.

Also been there and 100% agree. Scary as hell.
Especially the vaccines for covid, flu, RSV, measles, etc. I know our collective brain is fried because Covid was deeply unhappy for so many people, but I guarantee you that seeing your kid struggle breathe is not something you ever want to experience.

We hear "DC Restaurants are Dying!" hot takes like clockwork every time one restaurant closes, meanwhile two more open to replace it and then some but that always gets ignored by the anti-I82, etc. people, enough is enough.
As the I-82 debate heats up, the Council budget office recently prepared a report on the state of the DC restaurant industry since its passage.
Essentially, they found that the city is adding more employees and new restaurants than its neighbors:

The commanders stadium is a net loss for DC taxpayers, regardless of what Bowser and Mendelson pretend.

It was a day for ballot initiatives in the D.C. Council, as an attempt to repeal Initiative 82 was defeated (but could come back) while lawmakers funded ranked-choice voting, which was approved by voters last year as Initiative 83. For @51st.news: 51st.news/d-c-council-...

Are DC voters going to need to pass a third intative? Stop listening to the whining of RAMW, this is just dragging out the inevitable which makes it more painful for everyone involved.
NEWS: Tomorrow D.C. Council will vote on repealing Initiative 82, which phases out the tipped minimum wage. Under proposal, base wage for tipped workers would be $8 (down from $10 now), but min. wage they’d earn would be $20. That’s more than $17.50 non-tipped workers make.
