Sad news. Walter S. Judd was my master's thesis advisor and an excellent teacher of taxonomy and systematics. He had a positive influence on my career trajectory.
I have the sad news that my friend & mentor Walter S. Judd passed away last Sunday. Walt was an award-winning teacher & a stellar systematist & taxonomist. His work with Ericaceae & Melastomataceae is the model of what good taxonomy is all about. He will be greatly missed. #Botany 🌾🧪

Autumn is on the way, and with the change in season, so comes the change in colours.

Once Sphagnum moss has established in a peatland environment, the different species develop their natural colours, and we think it’s just beautiful – particularly these autumnal hues of red and burnt orange.

I think the Headdesk Project, Tariffs edition, will go live this week?

It's actual name is Civix Comics and the mascot is, of course, a civet wearing glasses and a dapper vest with a bowtie.

The WH has covered up POTUS health issues forever and Biden's is not the worse. Consider just a few:
-Reagan's emerging Alzheimer's
-JFK's Addison's disease (and drug regime) & sex addiction
-FDR's wheelchair
-Wilson's strokes (and non-recovery)
-Cleveland's oral cancer
-Pierce's alcoholism

I'm painfully tired of honey bees still getting the most attention when they're not native to North America. They're basically livestock and outcompete our native bees. We do NOT need more urban hives.

So please, let's some some of our glorious wild bees for a change!

In this age of diminishing funding, citizen and community science work becomes ever more important.
As a wildflower enthusiast, I love the iNaturalist app. It's helped us ID plants in our backyard & in countries around the world. However, it also can help advance our knowledge of biodiversity. A recent story from the NC Botanical Garden provided a great example 1/n

Love this! Failure is an integral part of any learning process. Pausing, reassessing and going at it again. Applies to all kind of scenarios, really ,)
The Journal of Trial and Error is a scientific publication that only publishes papers with negative or unexpected results.

The team behind it wants to change how the scientific community thinks about failure in order to improve science.
What To Do When Your Hypothesis Is Wrong? Publish!
In an effort to learn from scientific failure, The Journal of Trial Error only publishes “negative” results.
