because I'm trying to get less afraid of JS, I made a silly tool for conference session chairs to pull up on their phones/ipads to keep speakers on time with a 20-minute countdown timer #amsmt25 presentations.meganlavengood.com/timer

Hey #amsmt25 folks - I made a feed for the conference. It should capture more folks who just write "AMS/SMT" or "SMT/AMS" or have common variations of the hashtag (e.g. amssmt25, amsmt2025, smt25, ams25, etc.)

I’m visiting the Lurie Garden while in Chicago, designed by Piet Oudolf. So excited! I’ve been wanting to see this garden for a long a long time.

Thought I’d have a stab at setting up a ‘Sound Studies’ Starter Pack. I’ve started by including folk who list the term in their bio. If you’d rather not be included or would like to be added, please do let me know. Please share, as I’m sure there must be more than 23 of us.

Become a stronger writer with one simple question: do i need that being verb? Could an action verb replace it?

If you are in music academia and haven't yet subscribed to @diberjones.bsky.social 's substack, I highly recommend it. In her latest she assesses benefits of graduate work regardless of employment prospects; as she astutely puts it, "career paths are murky everywhere in late capitalism."
Was getting a PhD worth it?

Thanksgiving is upon us! So...how best to show your distain to your terrible relatives? How about eel pie?

In his 15th C. cookbook, Bartolomeo Platina includes a recipe for eel pie w/ instructions to feed it to your foes when it's done, because eel pie has no redeeming features.

Reposting bc I’m currently in the throes of figuring out how to publish my diss research (in ways that spark joy)
It’s alive! For my 2nd Chronicle column I tackled turning the diss into a book and, crucially, how wildly unsustainable the current publish-or-perish culture is for both scholars and publishers. We love scholarly books! Bad credentialing systems not so much though.

Hey Americans, feeling politically powerless? You have an election tomorrow. Fascists are targeting those boring state and local positions and using them for everything from abortion restrictions to book bans to criminalizing trans healthcare. It's up to you to stop them.
