This morning, we won a court order blocking Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, from accessing Americans’ private data.

Musk and his DOGE employees must destroy all records they've obtained.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: no one is above the law.

Maybe You Should Shout Fire in a Crowded Theater (If It's On Fire): The Coup Continues Rebecca Solnit Rebecca Solnit 05 Feb 2025 — 8 min read Yesterday the Associated Press ran a story with this sentence in it: "Last week, regional managers for the General Services Administration, or GSA, received a message from the agency’s Washington headquarters to begin terminating leases on all of the roughly 7,500 federal offices nationwide, according to an email shared with The Associated Press by a GSA employee." That sentence came a little after after the opening sentence which declared that Musk and Trump were moving "to cut down on office space." So far as I can tell this means largely eliminating the federal government--for example the federal government has in my region (California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, some Pacific US territories) 170 government-owned buildings and leased space in 827 buildings. Meanwhile the difference between reducing and eliminating all the leased space seems more or less like the difference between a haircut and the guillotine. And the story, which seemed clear to me if not the AP, clarifies that Musk's apparent goal isn't to reduce the size of the federal government; it's to eliminate it. Especially if you relate it to all the other stories out there about what Musk is doing, though there's often a notion in mainstream journalism that connecting things to other things is editorializing, that the audience should be delivered facts stripped of context in the name of objectivity.

Trump has given everyone who works for him immunity though his pardon power.

They are now all uber men, not bound by laws, norms, separation of powers. Little people things.

Unsurprisingly, they go on a world-altering crime spree.

We Are Not Who They Think We Are: How Human Nature Matters In This Emergency Rebecca Solnit 04 Feb 2025 — 10 min read Welcome to the emergency--or rather Meditations in an Emergency, this newsletter, not the national emergency, which is of course very unwelcome. What's striking to me about all the things our morally and imaginatively impoverished billionaires, notably Musk and Trump, right now is: they do not expect or imagine or understand consequences. Any of them– their theory of change seems to be that they are going to do stuff and then it will be done. Like they're moving furniture around, like you and I and the trans and immigrant communities and federal workers and Canada and Mexico are just so many sofas and chairs that are going to sit where they place us. Like we're inanimate objects. Maybe everything is dead in the sad lonely worldview inside their head. Which would also explain their recalcitrance about climate and nature: if you see it as a collection of inert objects rather than an intricate living system in which what you do to any one part may affect the whole, you grant yourself more license to meddle. But today I'm here to talk about the human--and human nature, and how they misunderstand that too.

Love that folks are posting bookshelves so here is one of mine- Buddhism. My other ones are art, environment, fine literature, and psychotherapy. Everything else I get from libraries.
