Hello, new followers!

I'm Mattie and I'm a St. Louis-based writer. I mostly write short fiction though I've got a novel in the works. My genres of choice are dark fantasy, horror, romance, and erotic fiction—esp with gothic or folkloric elements. I love history, horror movies, and heavy metal.
Thinking of going social media hermit mode until after the holidays are over. It’s a stressful time of year for me.

Realized with where this scene is located on my scrivener doc relative go the others I’ve accidentally written rep for the PMDD/PME girlies and I think I’m just gonna make that as good as canon tbh
I fiddling around with my romance novel and started writing a scene i hadn’t planned on that I realized is actually going to be helpful for giving the story more structure/momentum, at least wrt to the development of the protagonists’ relationship.

It’s also real angsty

There is little I hate to see more than lifted F1-50s in the city or suburbs. You do not need that tank to go to your office job or the grocery store.
pickup trucks for the average person should not have been allowed to advance past this. if you need anything bigger, you should have to provide some kind of documentation showing you have the license and need for special heavy machinery, otherwise you get the 1990 toyota hilux

If I was going to do a pithy summary of this story it’s “two people who hate themselves find love and self-actualization through folklore-heavy fantasy Satanism”

I decided not to read the emails pedophiles sent each other. I understand the importance but that's not how I'm spending my day today.

Can’t believe I forgot but also: femdom, but more in a “man submits to beautiful feminine woman in terrified reverence even and perhaps esp. if she is cruel to him despite the fact that he could strangle her one-handed” sense than “buff muscle mommy steps on man’s balls then brutally pegs him” sense
Not listing by character because sometimes the kink is just my barely disguised fetish but some that commonly come up in my work are:

Blasphemy
BDSM (emphasis on the D and M)
Outdoor sex
CNC
Monsterfucking (primarily demons)
Blood (generally, also menstrual blood specifically)
Spit
Breathplay
In the spirit of kink positivity--what kinks do everyone's characters have (if this is something your characters have)?

*Important note: Ace people and characters can and do also have kinks!

Not me looking wistfully at the Horror Writer’s Chat posts going up today lmao
Coming to the realization that I don’t really write horror-ass horror and kinda never did, especially looking at my projects in progress which are all better categorized as dark fantasy or gothic romance.

Having way too many WIPs going at once. I get things finished but I know I’d get them finished faster if it were easier to just lock in on one project at a time.
What's a bad writing habit you have that you'd like to kick? #WritingPrompt

imo it’s “people will put up with many things if you have a lot of money.” Nobody gaf if a working class kid is great with numbers. They’re still going to get bullied by their peers if they’re perceived as weird or annoying.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

My hot Frankenstein take is that Frankenstein is a textually rich work and the beauty and longevity of these works is that different people can interpret them through radically different lenses. Making your monster movie about accepting your father/son's flaws is a new lens that enriches the corpus.

I might if I wrote faster, but I write slow enough that I have a perpetual backlog of story ideas.
Writers, do you ever fear running out of story ideas? This is one fear I don’t have #writingq #WritingCommunity

My mom’s old Victorian poetry textbook from when she was in college. I got bored one day and started reading through it. I was 13 or 14.

Swinburne and Browning and Tennyson and both Rossettis rewired my brain. Formative in both developing my taste in literature and my style as a writer.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Me @ everyone who has ever called my prose “purple” tbh
No one tells you how much of this writing life is maintaining a one-sided cold war against some writer you feel wronged you years ago.

Frankly this is why I love him. I love that his movies are so tender and sentimental at heart and I love his sympathetic monsters.
Crimson Peak is Del Toro outright telling you, at heart, he's not a horror guy; he's a romance guy.

Currently on Charlie Parker book 3, The Killing Kind. I am applauding myself for making this decision because these books whip. If you ever wanted to read detective/crime fiction so fucked up you could make a strong case for it being horror, Connolly’s your guy.
Decided that for my audiobook listening for the foreseeable future, I’m gonna do John Connolly’s Charlie Parker books. I’ve already read a ton of them but it’s fun to listen.
