Folklore & folk horror enthusiast. Deactivates often, due to agonies.
What, cloaking everything in layers of ironic detachment and deflating every emotionally intense moment with quips?

One of the major reasons my fav genres are horror and romance is because they seem to be the only two that really wear their hearts on their sleeves anymore

I constantly feel out of touch with the zeitgeist because there is really nothing I crave more than art that is entirely in its feelings and meant to get the audience in their feelings as well.

Not for nothing, Romantic and Victorian literature were my particular areas of interest in college

I think this might be why I liked the movie a lot more than a lot of my peers seem to have. If there is one thing I get (and love) it is emotionally intense melodrama

I think a part is anxiety about being misread/read in bad faith. Used to be hard for readers to make their poor reading comprehension or bad faith readings the author’s problem. Now with social media and sites like GoodReads, it’s easier than ever before for readers to be shitty to writers directly.

Lol right? At that age, “math” is like, being able to count to 10 and recognize that 6 is more than 2.

That said, STEMlord mindset is a very real thing. Some people really do believe as long as you’re good at math/science, nothing else matters. Arts, humanities, basic social skills? Not important.

These people are universally intolerable and it’s why I’m a firm believer in liberal arts education.

Yeah I get subjectively not enjoying it, but it's not like GdT's interpretation is wholly unsupported by the novel—he's not just making shit up or totally misunderstanding it.

I feel like all these "it's bad because it's sentimental/it's bad because the monster is too sympathetic" takes i'm seeing are slowly driving me insane. It's an old af novel and has been reimagined tons of times. Guillermo del Toro making a Guillermo del Toro movie is hardly a sin.

Correct take imo

That said, re: Nosferatu (and also The Witch)

If you've grown up as a woman in a sexually repressive religious environment, he actually captures how it feels EXTREMELY well. I actually think he's a better feminist director than a lot of self-proclaimed feminist directors

If he wanted to do a romance or something else with a happy ending, I'd be equally interested in it as long as it had the same historical grounding and attention to aesthetic beauty.

I actually find the bleakness of his work like... not uninteresting, but probably the least interesting thing about it. The dedication to historical accuracy and the beauty in all the awfulness attract me more.

Him and Robert Eggers are my favorite directors because I feel like they’re just always going so hard into exactly their thing and I respect that a ton in addition to their things being very much also my things

Idk maybe I just love the guy too much, but criticizing GdT for having a sympathetic take on Frankenstein’s monster feels like criticizing a cat for meowing instead of barking
November 12, 2025 at 2:46 AM
Even his scariest movies tend to have sympathetic monsters, a great example being The Devil’s Backbone. Honestly it’s something I personally find deeply charming about his work. I understand why someone might not enjoy it but it’s so much his deal that he was obviously going to do it
November 12, 2025 at 2:40 AM
I honestly don’t get why so many people seem so shocked that GdT has an almost totally sympathetic monster. That’s his thing. If you don’t like that thing, you should not be watching a GdT movie
November 12, 2025 at 2:36 AM
Yeah like as a reader, horror is my favorite. But I’m realizing the more I purposefully write romance and fantasy, fullblown horror isn’t really in my wheelhouse as a writer I don’t think. Hopefully nobody thinks I’m too much of a poser lol
