I’m still enamored with the idea of iyyi kowa and the more and more I read and think about it, the more find that it offers a LOT more direction and intuition.

So in the spirit of #iyyikowa I’m gonna use this thread to keep track of actionable items I am doing to support my community. 🧵

Sen. Booker just broke the record for the longest floor speech in Senate history—a record set by Strom Thurmond trying to block the Civil Rights Act. The irony ain’t lost on us. From fighting against justice to fighting for it. This is what courage & being on the right side of history looks like!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cory Booker breaks the record for longest Senate speech, previously held by segregationist Strom Thurmond.

Cory Booker has held the Senate floor for 17 hours and 21 minutes.

The record of 24 hours and 18 minutes is held by segregationist Strom Thurmond, who spent that time protesting the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

I am pretty sure Booker would not mind changing that history.

Had a better day today, despite the poor sleep. Was able to get out and sew at my grandmothers house. 3/5 ribbons done on the front panel of the skirt. Almost there! 💜 (the stitches on the ribbons are not the straightest, but the thread matches so from a distance it’s hard to see).

I have seen a bald eagle every day of the week so far 🦅 especially the two that soar with the local flock of turkey vultures & black vultures. &I noticed that there are cedar trees near where I now park for work.

The natural world is certainly being kinder than the rest of the world this week.

My social feeds are filled with the most ✨gorgeous✨ ribbon skirts, esp the ones that incorporate chahta motifs.

Tbh it’s inspiring me to learn how to sew. (+ a good skill to learn in general)

Hakchuma update 🌱

With *vague gesture* everything else going on in the world, most of my mental wellbeing is currently coming from tending to these seeds. It’s my favorite thing to look forward to at the end of the day.

This isn't anti-DEI - it's retelling history as a story with only white men in it. The tale of the Navajo Code Talkers is essential to understanding the Allies' victory in WWII. Removing it because the people involved were non-white is segregationism.

I know it’s a recent post, but… much love to the people of Ireland, from a Choctaw woman.

The only time I visited Ireland was before the Kindred Spirits sculpture was installed in county Cork, which means I need to go back and visit. It’s a reminder of my favorite Choctaw phrase, iyyi kowa (lit. Broken foot), our concept of community service and helping others in need.
