#A-Haydn-A-Day is back! As before, I'm putting my favourite recording of each work on a playlist. It's more justified to call Haydn The Father of the String Quartet than of the symphony, as in this case he more-or-less invented the medium.
Two gorgeous helpings of it's-later-than-you-think late Romantic loveliness, including the teenage Korngold's sublime Sinfonietta, followed by Krenek's jolly jazz-Eurodance mashup. Orchestra, conductor & engineers capture the saturated, seductive soundworld superbly ❤️❤️❤️

Four great Haydn symphony discs not from the usual suspects. Monteux's Clock is the best bar none. I love that Egarr (a harpischordist) does La Passione without continuo. McGegan's just three of Haydn's greatest symphonies superbly done. Herbig shows big bands can do early symphonies brilliantly.

'Branch Hill Pond, Hampstead.' In the summer of 1821, John Constable began making direct studies in the open air of cloud formations. These were mostly made from the high ground at Hampstead village - an ideal observation point.
