I worry for the future in this new Paramount environment
Star Trek belongs to the fans, far as I'm concerned. I mean that goes for pretty much any big franchise these days, but ESPECIALLY Trek.

Pop culture is the modern-day mythology. These are OUR stories, they've become a part of who we are. They have shaped our values, our morality, and our hopes.

almost nobody pays for the bus ;)
100%. But I'd thought that one main advantage to free fares would be that it would speed onboarding, and thus transit time. Maybe that's a mirage, idk. But since this piece prioritizes time and reliability would have been good to address.

the tradeoffs discussed, though, are important.
Everyone is dunking on this piece but I think it's worth taking seriously. There's been good-faith debate among urbanists for years about whether free fares offer the best bang for the buck. It's OK to support a candidate and still subject their policies to scrutiny!

These people aren’t afraid Mamdani would be a bad mayor. We have a ridiculous, corrupt, incompetent mayor right now and the city is hanging in OK. They’re declaring all-out war because they’re afraid Mamdani (or Lander) might be a good mayor.

I don't think I've ever felt more like burning it all down than I have while witnessing the elite project to turn Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander into scary, incompetent monsters while turning an actual incompetent monster, Andrew Cuomo, into a merely complicated fellow who just made an oopsie.
