Last week in Delft a lovely man stopped us and asked if we spoke English. We said yes, but we probably wouldn’t be much use to him as we were visitors. He said no - he just wanted to advise us to walk down this street as there was a good view of the church. So we did and there was. Heart-warming.

This beautiful ‘network’ mosaic glass bowl looks modern, yet it’s about 2,250 years old!

Made using a technique in which thin threads of twisted glass were spiralled over a convex mould. A wonderful example of the skill of ancient glassmakers!

My photo shows a hemispherical yellow glass bowl which measures 12.8 cm in diameter and 7 cm in height. The bowl is composed of canes of spirally twisted threads of colourless glass with opaque yellow and translucent dark violet. It is dated 270-246 BC. It was found at Canosa di Puglia (Italy) which at that time was a Hellenistic Greek colony. Place of manufacture East Mediterranean. Part of the fantastic glass collections at Landesmuseum Württemberg, Stuttgart, Germany.

Stunning Roman cobalt blue cast glass drinking bowl with ribbed and white trail decoration.

This lovely bowl is a wonderful example of the skill of ancient glassmakers 2,000 years ago!

Roman-period cast blue ‘rippenschale’ drinking bowl with vertical ribbed decoration around the body. Traces of white glass trails are visible across the ribs and once decorated the areas in between the ribs, as indicated by faint areas of iridescence. Bands of white glass decorate the area just below the slightly flared lip. The display lighting enhances the translucence of the cobalt blue glass, and small patches of iridescence. Place of manufacture Eastern Mediterranean, 1st century AD.

Discuss their sentimental value, their rarity, their histories, then build amazing book nooks and shelves and little libraries to organize them

A hemispherical bowl made of mosaic cast glass. Translucent dark blue with opaque white spirals. There is slight corrosion and weathering of the glass. The bowl has been restored. Height: 7.2 cm, diameter: 13.1 cm. The effect of the museum lighting shining through the blue glass with white swirls brings to mind the painting ‘Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh.

A hemispherical red pottery bowl with supports in the shape of a pair of human feet. Made from Nile clay, polished to give a light surface sheen. The bowl tips slightly forwards as if offering its contents. Made in Egypt around 5,500 years ago, during the Predynastic Naqada period
