It’s often a fear of failure, mostly economic failure. The same stuff that keeps most of us up at night, only with, say, demons.

Q4 is up. Ten minutes to outro and the promo: I am still working my way through. You're all wonderful busy bees today and I adore you!
This one is a little easier. No archetypes!

Bro culture is so absurd in real life that it’s easy to exaggerate and show in fiction how self-destructive it is. These “dudes” are their own worst enemies so that’s how I let their worldview bury them in the narrative.
Well then, #HorrorWritersChat. What's an archetype anyway? I jest. We're all writers here... after alllllllll....

What scares my male characters the most is loss. Regardless of their alignment, fear of loss directs their actions:

+ Loss of face amongst male peers/the powerful means one holds on to power at any cost.

+ Fear of losing loved ones means another will go feral to protect them.

#HorrorWritersChat great question! I covered this in Q3. Zach is a trans man who begins his transition at college and his fears are built around loss of self. Andy fears violence, Carl fears rejection, and Will is afraid of his sexuality being used against him.
#horrorwriterschat - Taxes. They don’t like taxes.

Say what you will about Trump, but given what he likely has it’s disgusting that people around him are allowing him to remain as President. Both the likely ailments worsen under stressful situations.

Hi #HorrorWritersChat. Once again it is Oli Jacobs, crafter of cosmic horrors here, invading your feeds. And what brought fear upon young OJ? Bridges. Even now I fear they may collapse, but my dad stomping on one to reassure me was ill-conceived...
Hola, Horror Writers. I'm going to post and eat as I've pretty much just walked in. But, we're all about it today, so close to Halloween!
Tell me tell me. What scared you as a child?

No links, no hawking books please, till the end. Thanks Thanks.

I'm Amber, a horror and dark fiction writer from central Maine. I write all kinds of horror, most with cults or ghosts. I spent my first four years in a Pentecostal church, so my biggest fear growing up was hell.

Hi! I'm Rebecca! I write a mix of fantasy, sci-fi, horror, mystery and romance. (Or some mishmash thereof.)

My childhood fears included spiders, cockroaches and The Ring (amongst other things).

#horrorwriterschat Hi I’m Ian. I’m actually writing a novel now - time travel horror. Oooh. My childhood fear is Batman throwing me off a cathedral.

So, greetings, #HorrorwritersChat bods.

I be Eryn, one of your co-hosts for this mighty event.
I write psychological and supernatural horror, and I was always terrified of the dark as a kid. Or more importantly, what lurked out there in the dark.

I really don't have a favorite character. I have a favorite type - angry men and women seeking revenge. The more outlandish and ridiculous the reward the better. I like karma stories. They're satisfying. I write other horrors but that's a popular theme of mine.
QUESTION FOUR

There’s a knock at the door.

Before you can answer it, the door opens and reveals…your favourite character. They are your creation.

Who is visiting you?
Why are they your favourite?
And why are they here, now?

And they're my favourite because they are cool as fuck.

#HorrorWritersChat hmmmmm.

Some of mine will not help you, I fear.

Writing into Atticus, with open dyslexia font.
Listening to brown noise.
Lifting weights between scenes.

They're certainly strange!
QUESTION TWO

We stand before your writing area #HorrorWritersChat

Which three tools (apps? Items? objects?) do you find useful when writing?

Are there any you’d recommend to other writers?

So... using my latest book, Welcome to Ferrendale (cheap plug), as the subject, my inspirations were...

Salt Marie Celeste - Nurse with Wound (music)
Shadow over Innsmouth by HP Lovecraft (book)
The Wicker Man (film)
The Thing (film)

QUESTION THREE

The room includes the media that inspires your writing.
Books. Films. Music. Art.

Share four that inspired your last published horror work or your latest horror WIP.

#HorrorWritersChat My three big tools for writing:

1. My music apps. I like ambient, New Age, trance, and techno when I write. Which genre depends upon what I'm writing.

2. A drink - flavored seltzer, iced tea, or champagne.

3. An interdimensional portal that drops great ideas into to my lap.
