Love looking at it like this. It’s true. Artists are less delusional even though sometimes we feel MORE delusional. Have to remember that. There’s a strength to being unsure about things. An excerpt in The Guardian from George Saunders’ speech from the National Book Awards last night.

Trans Day of Remembrance is a moment of reflection, mourning, and clarity.
We honour the trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse people whose lives were taken by violence, neglect, and systemic injustice.

#HorrorWritersChat

My male characters are most afraid of losing control, failing, and missing opportunities to such a degree they are blind to the realities right in front of their very eyes.
#HorrorWritersChat

Depends on the story. Kyle fears and loathes being alone. Frank is just genuinely afraid of the crawling horror eating his chickens. Ted and Sam don't have fears per se; they have trouble letting go of their grief.

The masks my characters tend to wear are "I'm fine, really!" 🤣
Q4 is up. Ten minutes to outro and the promo: I am still working my way through. You're all wonderful busy bees today and I adore you!
This one is a little easier. No archetypes!

#HorrorWritersChat

I try to keep in mind: not all masculinity is toxic. I also aim to show that men aren’t only masculine but feminine in their energies. I have male characters who caregive for friends and sisters, for instance. Those are characterizations of divine masculinity (and not toxic)
Q3. I'm doing what I can to answer everyone, and repost, so bear with me. So I don't keep you waiting, I'll throw out 3. Interpret this one how you like. I know many queer folks like me do not align masculinity with man shaped. And with horror, we love to subvert our tales.

Bro culture is so absurd in real life that it’s easy to exaggerate and show in fiction how self-destructive it is. These “dudes” are their own worst enemies so that’s how I let their worldview bury them in the narrative.
Well then, #HorrorWritersChat. What's an archetype anyway? I jest. We're all writers here... after alllllllll....

I’m Tamara Kay Sellman and I write dark speculative fiction. I don’t write men (or women, for that matter) by way of a good v bad binary. I prefer to live and write in a world shaped by shades of gray. Humans live on a morality spectrum not defined by gender but by nature+nurture in context.
#horrorwriterschat

I'm Ryan. I write horror comedy and comedy about horror. There are a spectrum of men in my books, as there are in the world. What creates friction in both Say Uncle and Saint's Blood is the interactions of men who lean into gender and men who are trying to break free of it
Here we go, #HorrorWritersChat!

Q1 has arrived. It's international men's day today, and I thought actually that's a good topic. Not the easiest one to build questions around, either. So if I do not hit the mark I am sure you will forgive me.
As usual, no links, no pitches, not till the end.

On Intnatl Men’s Day, I ask men to proclaim they are feminists.

Why? Because men in touch w/their divine (not toxic) masculine easily understand their role is to protect the divine feminine …

not because women are superior, but because the change in the world we need right now honors/values women

So you people forgot DJT shamed/mocked a disabled man 10yrs ago but now you're shocked/angry that he bodyshamed a female reporter today? Sorry, I drew that line in the sand 10yrs ago. Why didn't you? For his next trick, he'll shame poor white men. Wait for it.

Great thread. I still wonder/worry about those who have all their social eggs in Meta's AI-incubating basket. Do those people not realize they are teaching LLM with every post, including images of their families etc? Blech.
This video from a year ago — and it's been a hell of a year — is really worth the watch.

now this is the kind of transparency we need in publishing!
Our yearly finance report for Radon is out. It also serves as a public showcase of exactly how much it takes to produce a genre journal.

I remember when I was younger wondering why no one ever made detailed public posts on this topic. And wanting to see some. So now I make one each year
How Much It Costs to Run a Literary Journal – 2025

Radon Journal is a not-for-profit science fiction publisher committed to transparency. This is our yearly public financial thread. We also want to show aspiring editors the true costs of running a semi-pro journal. #writingcommunity (1/10)
