You need a 3rd thing that’s unplugged. Like, zero media. Walking. Gardening. Barre. Scratch cooking w/o recipe. Jigsaw puzzle. These are so grounding, they take the pressure off the writing/artist’s life to do all the heavy lifting. The relief + joy that come from writing “just because” is palpable

I remember the “free to be you and me” messaging in ‘76, followed by “you are the worst gen to go through this school” in ‘77. Then the slacker labels came—a steady stream.

Was also told by my parents not to be a writer/journo b/c it wasn’t real work.

Did it anyway, retired comfortably at age 55!

I was 12 in ‘77 — teachers repeated the refrain then: we’d never amount to anything b/c we lacked work ethic.

The world changed between ‘77 and ‘89 when you were 12.

I was already married, past college. The slacker messaging was all we heard in the workplace.
