So people who’ve fled death & torture are going to be denied the chance to live with their families- who may themselves consequently be exposed to the same dangers- and I’d suggest not a single Reform voter will vote Labour as a result while other Labour voters will abandon them in disgust

Perhaps, one day, schoolkids will study this squalid little chapter in British terror-panic history. When they do, I hope these two headlines from today are printed side by side, with clear annotation of which individual faced more outrage and condemnation.

I'm genuinely gobsmacked that the Home Office think this is a good idea. How do they envisage "training" technology to verify the age of a young person from (say) Darfur or Iraqi Kurdistan? They might as well get the calipers out and start doing phrenology
Given what we know about AI reproducing existing racial bias, and the inaccurate and racist results of facial recognition technology, this has to be there with the worst proposals the Home Office has ever made, and believe me, the bar is high

A reminder that according to a Yougov poll from last month (18.06.2025):

55% of British adults oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza (only 15% support)

And 45% of British adults think Israel is committing a genocide.
Police in Canterbury today informed a protestor that the phrase "Israel is committing genocide in Gaza" could be considered a declaration of support for Palestine Action and therefore a terrorism offence.

There is no greater distance between the facts on the ground and the political discourse than this fucking genocide. Thousands of people are being killed and starved! Children! No one meaningfully disputes this. Yet the only thing the media generates moral outrage about is the civility of protestors

What's astonishing about this is that "violence against a military force currently shelling civilians at food distribution points in the occupied territory they have been starving out" becomes equivalent to "calling for a genocide". It's just an insane moral reversal of the actual situation.
This looks completely deranged - and it is - but it’s a product of 2018-19, the late Brexit/Corbyn Labour era. Short version: it finally dawned on the lads that they are holding the microphones, so *they decide what the story is*, and how intense it should get. It’s worked very well for them so far.

Remarkable watching the evidence pile up, and a substantial mass of high profile commentators continue to contort themselves ever more painfully in order to deny that reality is in fact reality.

As it stands this is genuinely just vowing not to be able to do anything that might make them popular (see quote from: sootyempiric.blogspot.com/2025/04/more...) in order to raise the salience of an issue, and endorse a perspective on that issue, which Reform will always be better than them.

This may be the biggest free speech crisis in living memory. The president now bragging about detaining a lawful permanent resident and smearing him as 'pro Hamas', no outlining any specific crimes he is accused of or charged with. This is what a fascist takeover looks like.

It's bonkers that successive governments have taken one thing the UK was genuinely very good at and simply trashed it, destroying thousands of livelihoods, weakening teaching, and gutting cultural life in the process, all out of self-destructive obedience to the paranoid fantasy of marketization
Just found out that as of today that History as a whole is being notified that we’re at risk of redundancy. This’ll be the second time I’ve had to reapply for my own job in under 5 years! Our sector is at breaking point.
The University of Northampton is making significant cuts that put many programmes at risk, including our MA in History. NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
