Super-interesting article about Wystie. But Funeral Blues in sub-head? Oof. Why not Limestone? A straight reading of Funeral Blues is that it’s mawkish. Its real cleverness lies in that it’s a satire. Or am I being a snob?

Trans is a complex issue and I remain open to persuasion. But this column feels about right to me.
The reaction to women celebrating the For Women Scotland legal victory only serves as a reminder that while the law is the law our culture remains dead-set against women who say no.

My final column for the Observer.

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.

Apropos of nothing and addressing no-one in particular, it just occurred to me that this year I will have known my partner for as many years as the years she had when I first met her. I remain uxorious.

Wonderful!
Pentametron was one of the great web art projects, retweeting couplets of accidentally iambic tweets. Thanks to Bluesky's open feed, I have resurrected the concept..

Crows are so fascinating. This is well worth a follow.

What novels changed the way you see the world in the long-term?

The Bluest Eye (Morrison), The Book of Negroes (Hill), Moby-Dick (Melville), American Psycho (Ellis), Long Division (Laymon), The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness (Shin), and Mansfield Park (Austen) are all on my list

I’ve been reluctant to start a Substack, because I like being commissioned, I like being edited, and I especially like to be paid.

But I couldn’t face hawking this one around to weary editors, for reasons that you may understand if you read it.

Visiting family - found this bottle I dimly recall buying many years ago at auction, stored in far too warm place the last few years (rest of family not wine obsessives, so they don’t get the memos) – but gosh it’s good – complete, mature, long, warm, full, spicy – what a pleasant surprise. Ooh.
