Now superimpose this map with one of where same-sex marriage is legal. 😂
Some parts of Europe have a growing population, while others are shrinking—

The map shows which European countries saw an increase in population, and which saw a decrease in the year from July 2022 to 2023.

apparently reading this made an ex-soldier upset, so let me clarify: if you never questioned all your motivations for becoming an instrument of violence, then you should do that ; and if you did and came to the conclusion that they were Pure™, then why are you upset?
i genuinely never understand having respect for soldiers: as a rule, anyone who signs up to be an instrument of violence also wants to be an agent of violence and can't be trusted

and to be clear: people who sign up to be soldiers or cops don't do it for the most noble reasons in the world

even if you do it for the most noble reasons in the world, for community self defense or whatever, and you end up being hugely beneficial for society, you should still interrogate the part of you that waited for a permission to be violent

My main point was that U.S. police officers are, one to one, much more violent than U.S. soldiers, and much likelier to commit murder at close range out of anger.

If I was the commander in chief of the Imperial hegemon I would simply not dismantle the network of military and diplomatic alliances, favourable trade deals, and broad cultural paramountcy that had made my nation the most wealthy and powerful the world has ever seen.

"Hahaha" said Gandalf, hitting his weed pen for the seventeeth time that hour. "Fuck".
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Ding ding ding. The next round of Horizon in Europe focuses heavily on AI and has large chunks for "defense" ( aka how to kill and subdue ppl at EUs borders and in protection of EUs multinationals). While we could be really serving ppl and planet with meaningful research.
TL;DR: the huge amounts of funding put into the human genome project meant researchers kept chasing funding to find genetic causes of disease, but it’s looking more and more likely that only a minority of disease is caused by genetics—even diseases that can be genetic are more often environmental.

This gets me back to one of my main critiques of academia, which is that most people go where the funding is, particularly in science, and it leads to so much harm when a particular field or methodology or style of investigation is overfunded.
