I have to say, probably the biggest gift I get this Christmas is @johannestevans.bsky.social gifting literally tens of his short stories on his Smashwords... It's difficult to beat (counts) almost 50 new books tbh

This. If you're an aspiring translator don't use MT or AI translation. You'll never learn how to understand or convey the nuances of the original text if you cheat. It's hard but if you don't learn how to do the hard stuff then you'll never get better.
We don’t talk enough about the skills loss that AI is causing, and even less about the skills that won’t be created because people will cling to technology for the most basic information processing tasks. I wonder who will be the experts needed when the experts never quite materialise.

Today I got this stunning calendar illustrated with sumi-e paintings. What a way to start next year! Of course I immediately looked at the illustration for my birth month, haha.

Painting miniatures is such a delightful exercise of patience. And after you're done you have a little guy! Beautiful.

It's pretty surreal to me that along with other, maybe more polished ones, to study Japanese I'm still using an app (Obenkyo) I used like, 13 years ago? What do you mean I had a phone with apps 13 years ago.

Just made the slightly horrifying discovery that you can react to emails in Gmail... I'm sure it could be funny, but I'm now terrified I am replying with some terrible emoji at my serious emails 😭

Here's the unlikely century-long story of how a non-gendered pronoun became gendered, and then got itself re-de-gendered.

This one's got everything! Poetry! Grammar! Love songs! Queer communities! Unicode! and ... Y.R. Chao!

What more could you want?

It's Trans Day of Remembrance today, and I'm finding the words hard this year
We've lost so many wonderful people, we will have to fight harder than ever not to lose so many more

But I think of #Celeste, that this is a mountain we climb together, we remember those we lost 💜

Curious people want to know what microRNAs are. They're tiny molecules that help cells control the kind and amount of proteins they make. Gary Ruvkun and Victor Ambros won the 2024 Nobel Prize for discovering miRNAs. The graphic is from the Nobel website, illustrated by Mattias Karlén.

Sooo happy to have been today at Silvia Pozzi's talk at Milano Bookcity for her latest translation of Yu Hua's novel, 文城, in Italian "La città che non c'è". Translating Chinese literature is so fulfilling, and it's important that the foreign public has a chance to read these novels.

While this is more geared towards writers and artists, I think some of these also speak to me regarding pursuing life goals, and life in general.
