Yep document everything when starts off at its worse up to when it’s perfect and polished. Doesn’t matter how simple the task was have some record to point back to even for your own memory cos it’s all relevant at some point and should be part of your portfolio.

my biggest piece of advice for someone who is just starting out in the games industry ( from the pov of an env artist ) Is to TAKE LOTS OF SCREENSHOTS!! of everything you make,model, texture, set dress, light-all of it!! It's better to have options and cull down for your portfolio!

Can you tell me a bit more about vertex color like what is it's actual purpose? answer:Thank you, sure: Im simplifying but every vertex has built-in attributes: a position, a normal, UVW, Skins weights, ... and also Vertex color (RGBA). The best way to see it is that for every vertex you have an extra "data slot" in which you can store a RGBA Color and you can use it for anything. The most common purpose is to use that data in a shader For example you made a wind shader that displace vertices. But you want some parts of the mesh to not be affected, how to mask the effect? Well you could use a black and white texture, and map your mesh to that texture. Or you could use the Vertex color, and say every vertices with Red > 0 won't move. In some case it's easier than to use a texture and more performant More advanced example: Let's say you have a mesh composed of multiple submeshes (like a tree with branches). If you want to animated each branch in a shader, you can make it so all vertices of a branch have the RGB value that correspond to the XYZ local position of the branch's pivot. in this case you're storing XYZ position, in RGB vertex color! Other example: You shader you could the vertices Alpha to drive the Smoothness. Particle System in most game engine, already use vertex color without you knowing: In unity when you tint a particle, you actually change the vertex color of the particles and the particle shaders happens to color its output with the vertex color's RGB, and opacity with the vertex alpha! We call it vertex color, but in the end it's a Vector 4 / float 4 / 4 numbers, you can do whatever you want with it If you get deeper into the rabbit hole, you'll realize even UVs can be visualized as vertex color!

Remember if you truly despise GenAI and its outputs you need to put a lot more time celebrating and lifting all the artists not using it and trying there best and learning. Share their art like that art and just talk about the stuff you like and enjoy. Don’t let the anger of GenAi stop that.
