Speaking of #games and #gamedev, gotta say I'm kind of shocked how little results searching for "gameplay is narrative" returns. Like I know it doesn't really get considered much in AAA because of poorly applied departmentalization but surely it shouldn't be that novel of a thought in game design?

The Geoff Awards are not worth your time, but I can very much recommend looking into the IGF awards if you aren't familiar with it as of yet. I have discovered many great games through IGF that I'd have probably never heard of otherwise. IGF is a genuine celebration of indie games and is super cool!

The Geoff Awards are not worth your time, but I can very much recommend looking into the IGF awards if you aren't familiar with it as of yet. I have discovered many great games through IGF that I'd have probably never heard of otherwise. IGF is a genuine celebration of indie games and is super cool!

This is a thing I've thought about a lot and why it's important to have media with predominantly (or entirely) female casts to force people (including the writers sometimes!) to engage with the idea that "girl" is not a character trait like "the smart one" or something
Oh definitely.
Like many others, they see womanhood as a character trait, and after Gunpei Yokoi did a last minute reveal of Samus' womanhood in the very first game, they had no idea how to resolve that "character trait" with a badass yet caring space bounty hunter.

Feels like it should be bigger news that a journalist known for being loud about her investigations into banks/payment processors appears to be getting financially stonewalled by the entire industry unaminously right now.
Hearing about RAM prices going up and wondering if I should upgrade from 32 GB... only question really is that since my mobo is somewhat old, it'd mean updating to just 64 GB with two DDR4 sticks and keeping 3200+ MHz speeds, or going to 128 GB with four sticks and getting capped at ~2666 MHz.

Honestly, good for Expedition 33 for ending up as the success it has become. Means the devs will probably stick around and release their next game at some point. Maybe that one will be actually turn-based too!

NGL kinda weird to call Metroid your favorite game series yet vehemently deny that gameplay is narrative. "It's only capital T text if it's actual text like cutscenes, dialogue, or text logs" and you're talking about the atmospheric exploration series where the most beloved entries are 99% gameplay?

So a funny thing: as much as I loathe the NPC barker there has actually been one instance where I've actually enjoyed such a character... And it's an indie porn RPG of all things. But in it the NPC is actually successfully funny with a lot of deranged commentary to offer. No voice acting also helps

The part I hate most is when they decide to have the bark delay by some time as a "oh if the player doesn't notice it, THEN we'll give them a hint", then when I play I enter the room and am like "oh what a cool room, I will explore and enjoy the ambiance a minute" and I exceed the timer and it Barks
If you're making a game for the players who absolutely need extremely high-frequency nagging barks from an NPC, you're kind of making a game for no one *but* those players

this is so cart-before-horse to me. i don't accept that people's attention spans are shorter in a way that has to matter. the problem is that we keep thinking that and "complying in advance" with the imagined boogieman of "people not paying attention nowadays". nothing done in that direction helps
You wanna know why we're having nag line discourse in 2025? Because developers know we're fighting an attention economy war we'll lose no matter what. Players don't read, have TikTok open next to them, god forbid we are scared you miss something and then blame us for not giving you all the info.
