It occurs to me, that whole cottage industry of "Omelas responses" is rooted in an audience's outrage at being made to feel anything other than acceptable range of emotions.
Every response validates Le Guin's central thesis about her hypothetical audience's complicity in structural violence.

We praise specificity of focus... until the focus is on something we actually care about, eh?
But, and I'll say it again, sometimes we *should* feel bad. We should be made to feel anguish, sorrow, disappointment, even guilt. Our audience ego shouldn't always be catered to and coddled.
