It isn't difficult. Give people accommodations if they need it.

If we have a lack of resources then perhaps we should look at taxing the wealthy at a level that is appropriate.

Then don't consider it a question.

Better a thousand people with fake disabilities receive undeserved benefits than even a single person with an actual disability gets denied them.

Just give people help and stop pearl-clutching about someone getting more than they "dEsErVe"

We could easily have a post-scarcity society if not for the rich sociopaths in power so handwringing about this shit is disingenuous as fuck

Every hurdle you put in front of an able person to prevent them from receiving accommodations you also put in front of a disabled person. Every dollar you take from a program to discourage abuse is taken from providing accommodations or services.

Damn, you still stand by this even after all of us disabled people told you that you're full of shit? Give people accomodations. If someone is asking for them, they probably need them and it's a good thing that improves life for everyone. See curb cuts and online meetings during Covid.

Sometimes you have to take a belief you have, rotate it in your brain, and realize that the core conceit of that belief is something you should let go and change your mind.

Worrying about people getting accomodations despite not being "disabled enough" is weird.

We need to teach people the difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. Because the discomfort of the safest people is endangering the most vulnerable, all day every day.

See, I think this is exactly the reason kids need to learn file systems, both analog and digital.

Creative knowledge work isn't just knowing how to FIND information, it's understanding how to organize and sort & reconstitute information in new ways.

Systematic categorization is a key part of that.
But, as the article points out, if everything has a search function now, doesn’t that render the concept of folders obsolete? Why do they need to learn to use an outdated filing system?

I think this is really a thing that gets at the heart of why I’m terrified for the future of spaceflight. In place of science, the only viable economic model for space right now is defense. The industry and government see that, so we now have a bandwagon dependent on the threat of future conflict.
It’s important to point out that many of the cuts at NASA are to astrophysics and earth science, not just the space program

Most of that does not involve anyone going to space but involves us learning things that help us live better on earth
I mean, if we're going to fuck up this planet so bad. Should humans even be allowed to go into space?

somebody read the line from that article a few years ago about the sad puppies being the bleakest moment in the Worldcon timeline and thought 'we can beat that'

Read this whole thread. What a clusterfrak.
I’m not attending Worldcon this year & everything seems to be a mess but this is so mind-bendingly bad on so many levels that I think it’s worth unpacking while I’m in the no-space of airports

We have no streetlights in our Los Feliz neighborhood rn because thieves ripped out the copper wire a few weeks ago. A few years ago copper lampposts were hacked from the Glendale-Hyperion bridge. Etc etc. Trump has just poured jet fuel on the copper theft problem.

Knees are one of my leading refutations of "Intelligent Design". Also the human knee has only a 35-year warranty "under normal use*", so you're already on your own.

In Oakland we see that OPD cannot recruit enough to get near their target staffing

Massive public scandal / raising awareness of the awful stuff an institution does

Makes it hard to retain and recruit people!!

This is an area public opinion can outweigh budgets and policies
Attrition at DOJ is massive. They are losing lawyers left and right, and struggling to find replacements.
always fun to see that the Department of Justice's inexhaustible resources were apparently not enough so they've hired the former Nevada Attorney General (and 2020 election denier), the law firm suing Target for being "woke," and one of the most powerful law firms in DC to help.

help *me* out:

If the united states taxed billionaires at FDR rates— just billionaires, even; multi-millionaires could skate— a lot of things sure would be "suddenly" and "inexplicably" cheaper. Sure is nice to dream.

3 priorities now: 1. Make sure the backlash for this betrayal of The People is immense for the fascist GOP 2. Organize like a mofo: general strike + midterm races 3. Community care, mutual aid. The govt has abandoned Americans, we must redouble our efforts to care for each other now.

I see people saying, "What do we expect the Democrats to do? We don't have majorities in any of the three branches of government!"

But what I'm thinking is: Chuck Schumer's been a public servant since he was 24 years old. When, exactly, are we expecting him to get good at it?
