I've been frustrated with having to either not flush my cookies or turn off the AI search results every time I restart, but I just learned Duck Duck Go has a whole separate engine with no AI.

Do you want to know what your "Following" feed would look like without Bluesky-the-company? @mackuba.eu made a feed for this! Check out bsky.app/profile/did:... - you'll only see accounts you're following that are not on Bluesky-owned personal data servers (PDSes).

Thinking a lot lately about the simple fact that college allows people to spend about 15 weeks immersed in a disciplinary conversation with an expert in that field. And what a special thing that is.

Ok, but how are the robots going to feel when they find out ‘robot’ comes from the Czech word ‘robota’ which means “forced labor”??

spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"

A LOT of industry folks need to take "I think there's a very high possibility that this is all a bunch of horseshit" to HEART.

i realize car dealership owners are his demographic but holy shit lol
This, in particular, is spectacularly hideous. It's like something you'd see on the wall of a car dealership where they put pictures of their top salespeople every month

Grateful to spend two days on the Klamath watching chinook, liberated by dam removal, return to streams from which they’d been precluded since the Titanic sank. Fish are everywhere, in numbers that stagger the mind & locations that biologists figured would take years to repopulate. Too beautiful.

my university has expanded multiple departments to handle “AI initiatives” while demanding 5% budget cuts from all other schools/departments, and an ongoing pause on merit increases.

they cut 1% of ALL staff positions. but endless money for AI.
In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.

I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.
