The thing is that this mostly became an issue in the US because companies pushing it knew the dangers and didn't care; there was money to be made. All of these companies know what they are doing and don't give a shit because irrevocable impacts on society are just the cost of doing business.

As one Massachusetts school administrator recently said; this moment with AI is remarkably like the moment when we were introduced to asbestos. Yes, it had some remarkably promising characteristics – fireproofing! – and had some real utility in science, research, and industrial applications. But a profit-driven industry bullied us into inserting it everywhere; into our homes and schools and public spaces, before we really understood the risks. This resulted in decades, if not centuries, of illness, injuries, deaths, and the astronomical financial burden of trying to remove the stuff. As you, the leaders and policymakers in our schools, craft an AI policy for our district, we the undersigned call on you to: 1. Ban AI tools into the classroom, protect our students and teachers from de-skilling and allow them the space and time to engage in assignments themselves. 2. Resist any direct financial relationship or contracts with AI providers, as well as the “training” they might offer. 3. Provide a digital literacy curriculum to help students navigate the current digital landscape, and promote critical engagement with technology. 4. Guarantee that anywhere generative AI has already entered our classrooms or curriculum, an opt-out will allow students and teachers to refuse the use of these products at no risk to their grades, progress or employment.

• Resist the introduction of AI in our own software systems, from Microsoft to OpenAI to Apple. It is not in our interests to let our processes be corrupted and give away our data to be used to train models that are not only useless to us, but also harmful. • Ban AI use in the classroom for student assignments, in the same way we ban essay mills and other forms of plagiarism. Students must be protected from de-skilling and allowed space and time to perform their assignments themselves. • Cease normalising the AI hype and the lies which are prevalent in the technology industry's framing of these technologies. The technologies do not have the advertised capacities and their adoption puts students and academics at risk of violating ethical, legal, scholarly, and scientific standards of reliability, sustainability, and safety. • Fortify our academic freedom as university staff to enforce these principles and standards in our classrooms and our research as well as on the computer systems we are obliged to use as part of our work. We as academics have the right to our own spaces. • Sustain critical thinking on AI and promote critical engagement with technology on a firm academic footing. Scholarly discussion must be free from the conflicts of interest caused by industry funding, and reasoned resistance must always be an option.

Glad to see my colleagues in Dutch academia standing up against the uncritical embrace of AI from administrators. The fact that so many signatories come from AI studies shows this is not about being a luddite, it's a matter of protecting education itself. Read the letter and sign if you agree!

i have been hesitant to participate in the “AI for Good” Summit, that takes place in Geneva annually. but this year, i have been given a keynote (not a panel or similar participation) so, i said yes. here’s the first draft of my talk
The growing enthusiasm for applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to humanitarian and development goals has sparked a surge in "AI for Social Good" (AI4SG) initiatives from humanitarian and philanthropic institutions and tech monopolies alike. While these initiatives aspire to address global challenges such as poverty, gender inequality, and climate change, they often conceal deeper issues: AI systems that 1) simply fail to live up to their claims 2) encode Eurocentrism, systemic inequities, and injustices, and 3) built under capitalist, extractive, and borderline illegal practices. In this talk, I argue that that many AI4SG efforts are less about meaningful social transformation and more about techsolutionism—where complex political, historical, and social issues are reduced to technical problems assumed to be solvable through “innovation”. By critically examining who defines “good,” who benefits, and what structural issues remain unaddressed, this talk challenges the dominant narratives around AI4SG and calls for a more accountable, human-centric, and context-aware approach to “social good”.

Almost half of young people would rather live in a world where the internet does not exist, according to a new survey. The research reveals that nearly 70% of 16- to 21-year-olds feel worse about themselves after spending time on social media. Half (50%) would support a “digital curfew” that would restrict their access to certain apps and sites past 10pm, while 46% said they would rather be young in a world without the internet altogether.

"90% of medieval English altars contained hidden stone phalluses" factoid actually just statistical error. Most medieval English altars were destroyed in 1552. Phalloi Georg, who lives in a cave and has an altar with over 100,000 stone phalluses, is an outlier and should not have been counted.
