i think this attitude — that all opposition is illegitimate and nothing we do can be questioned— is probably pervasive in the white house and helps explain why they keep making terrible political choices
Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”

Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

ICE straight up murdered someone in Minnesota. Everyone up and down the chain needs to be held accountable for the lawless behavior and rampage directed by Steven Miller.

It’s notable that the president can go on TV and be a total gutter racist, and somehow this isn’t news in the slightest. Says a lot about the sickness of American society right now.
Trump: "They're paid agitators and insurrectionists. Nobody talks about the fact that $19 billion at a minimum is missing in Minnesota, given to a large degree by Somalians. They've taken it. Somalians. A lot of very low IQ people."

Yes. The right's "social cohesion" claim is empirically wrong, and immigration creates new forms of solidarity. As I argued in our big Stephen Miller piece, if immigrants really eroded social bonds, Miller wouldn't have to lie constantly about their social effects:

It appears ICE murdered someone in cold blood today and their plan is — per usual — to create a fog of lies so the killer does not face justice. We simply can't let that happen. The shooter has to be arrested and so does Bovino. They can't just kill people on the street.

The Pentagon will cut the military retirement pay of Sen. Mark Kelly for what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the Arizona Democrat’s “seditious” statements on a video telling service members they have the right to refuse to execute illegal orders.
