the reason i am leaving academia
academia and journalism suffer from the same fault - no solidarity. we all think of ourselves as independent contractors, lone geniuses. it sucks.
Once again I have to say our political reporters suck so much ass: one asks a legitimate question about trying to fucking overturn the election and the GOP reps all shit themselves and the next question is not "why are you avoiding my colleague's question" but "how confident are you" GTFOH you worm!

books have power, in every single way. that's why they are banned and burned . that's why its important for us writers to be aware of our own power (however small)

i want to write an essay about what is a creative's role during social, political upheaval, basically what is art in the face of war, the climate crisis, etc. i do think there is something here to be explored

my latest newsletter work (not my best, not my worst)
So... about Marvel movies
"Superhero fatigue", is Scorsese right?, and why is a novel writer talking about this?

One unexpected thing in my qualitative study w natural scientists (one-hour interviews) is how deeply, deeply sad the climate scientists are. They say things like "you have enough information from us, why won't anyone act?" -- the psychological distress these people are enduring is very great.

the funniest thing about Portugal i want americans to know is that disillusioned right winger or 'apolitical' folk will claim that we are living under socialism since 1974. yep, portugal, with... privatized energy, and... public-private partnerships in the health sector and...

i can't explain how eery it is, for a whole year i read nothing but books and newspapers from 73-74. israel-palestine was all over the news. the same discourse, the same problem.

in 1973, mozambique, angola, guinea-bissau and cape verde were still colonies of Portugal

1973.

I guess this piece is important as being the first time I put anything gothic in a painting. But as this piece here shows, I can pull of that sort of environment way better than I could then. I'd say I could remake that piece to make it more like the photo, but this recent one kinda filled that gap.
