To that end, USCIS declared flatly that the children of immigrants who are "unlawfully present" will "no longer be U.S. citizens at birth." They will, instead, inherit the status of their parents, rendering them detainable and deportable as infants and throughout their lives. There is no indication that the government will provide some grace period before snatching up and imprisoning this new underclass of noncitizen babies; they are apparently subject to arrest from the moment of birth.

Maduro was previously indicted in 2020 on federal charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation conspiracy.

Note: As I point out in my piece, the demonstration DHS is referencing here was led by faith leaders — seven of whom were among the 21 arrested.

I asked some of those clergy what they thought about DHS’ statement.

The Department of Homeland Security did not reply immediately to a request for comment, but on Friday a post on the department's X feed seemed to mock the protest participants, saying, "Womp womp, cry all you want. These criminal illegal aliens aren't getting released," the post read. The post called the demonstrators "violent rioters" and "imbecilic morons" who need to "get a job." Asked about the DHS statement, Woolf said he and other protesters were "demanding constitutional and due process rights" for detainees, adding, "I believe that justice will come in this life or the next." "I know which side I choose. I choose the gospel," he added. "This is our job," said the Rev. Kristina Sinks, a United Methodist pastor who helped organize a worship service, in reply to the DHS post. Sinks also rejected the suggestion that demonstrators were violent. She later explained via text message that she believes it is the job of clergy to "advocate for the oppressed, the vulnerable, and those dehumanized by any forces of evil and oppression." Sinks added: "Why does DHS feel threatened by clergy praying? What are they hiding?"

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Jesus Christ. DHS has held this guy in the hospital handcuffed to a bed and under constant guard for over a MONTH without ANY warrant or even ANY steps taken towards putting him into the removal system!
Petitioner’s counsel has requested documentation of a judicial warrant for his arrest, any charging documents, or other authority supporting his detention. See Santiago Decl. ¶¶ 18–20. ICE has provided no response. Id. To date, ICE has not placed Petitioner in removal proceedings, charged him with violating immigration law, set bond, issued a Notice to Appear, or otherwise processed him. See Pet. ¶¶ 16, 49. In Respondent’s Opposition brief, the government states “ICE intends to take further action consistent with the laws prescribed under the Immigration and Nationality Act (“INA”) once Petitioner is released from medical care and it can conduct the examination as [prescribed] in 8 C.F.R § 287.3.” Opp. at 4. Neither Petitioner nor Respondents have provided the Court with information about Petitioner’s citizenship, whether he has violated any law or regulation, or any information that would suggest that Petitioner is a flight risk.
