Exactly — absolute vs relative risk is one of my medical communication pet peeves. Yes, “doubles the risk” makes a better headline than “from 20 to 40 cases out of 10,000,” but it’s misleading.
Whenever something says "increased/decreased by X%" ALWAYS look up what the original number was.
Studies are constantly being reported about something that "doubles your cancer risk!"
But then it will turn out that the baseline cancer risk was .5%, so doubling it is still just 1%.
