At some point you realize that the prominent, powerful people you see on your screens are mostly morons who either got lucky or are saying things billionaires want to hear, and that nobody smart or competent is in charge, and we're all just collectively flailing, and it's a miracle anything works.

Am always exceedingly proud of my kids, but tonight feel especially proud that they’ll share an alma mater (Webb School, Knoxville) with @aftynbehn.bsky.social - who ran a hell of a race tonight in #TN7 & gave so many of us a real reason to feel hopeful for TN’s future.

@mets.com baseball is a business, of course; players come & go, things happen. But certain departures sting a little more than others.

We’re gonna miss you, Brandon - thank you for everything.

The last month of the anti-Mamdani campaign was an absolutely shameful undertaking, an attempt to rip the city and Democratic coalition apart and I'm very happy to see it failed.

There are many more of us than there are of them.
We must never forget this, no matter how dark things may (correctly) seem.
Feels like, between ..

1. “No Kings” rally

2. Benioff apologizing

3. Young Republicans getting suspended

4. Universities rejecting White House “contracts”

.. authoritarianism got something of a margin call this week.

It is the job of the Democratic party to sell and defend the policies that most Democratic voters want, not to present a candidate slate that is palatable to moderate Republicans who might switch if they hate their own candidate enough.

Illinois State Senator Karina Villa sprang into action to protect her community from ICE raids, alerting neighbors to their rights and chasing off masked agents. This is how you stand up to authoritarianism. We should all be inspired by Sen. Villa's courage.

Kirk was a racist who thought black people shouldn’t be pilots. He thought women should be subservient to men. He hated MLK and the Civil Rights Act. He didn’t care about political violence against Paul Pelosi and Democrats. All his own words. You can deplore the shooting without honoring the man.

No one deserves to meet his eternal reward this way - but imagine, just for a sec, if a comparably influential progressive media figure were tragically shot & killed.

Now imagine the right wing & Republicans being held to the same moral standards in their responses.

Nope - I couldn’t either.
Guy who declared war on Chicago shocked by violent political rhetoric. And the mainstream media is going to carry all of their water.

Hey, @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social - with all due respect, it is time to endorse @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social - he is the nominee of *your* party, overwhelmingly supported by *your* district’s own voters.

Strongly recommend getting on the train before it’s really too late - folks will remember.

This is good: With Trump/RFK destroying CDC, JB Pritzker's officials are exploring the possibility of buying Covid vaccines from manufacturers and distributing them in-state themselves, source tells me.

Dem govs must step up and fill the void.

New piece from me:

"Their insistence on owning guns, with very few restrictions, means that mass shootings—including in schools and churches—will always be part of American life."

Fundamental question from @jvl.bsky.social -

"Why won’t people just acknowledge that this is a tradeoff they’re willing to make?"
This might be the angriest I’ve ever been in print.

Kash Patel tweeting about his pullup workout instead of doing the job of counterterrorism kind of broke me. www.thebulwark.com/p/the-cdc-th...

Words/phrases Democrats should never use:

* bipartisan
* my Republican friends
* real, valid, legitimate, serious, important (to describe issue raised by Republicans)
* yea (when voting on Republican bills)
* distraction (to describe bad thing Republicans did)
* woke (in derogatory sense)

@danpfeiffer.bsky.social offers a helpful, reflective perspective on the Dems' language debate...and as is often the case, it's much more of a both/and, vs. either/or.

The Obsession Over Woke Language Misses the Point

Again, for @housedemocrats.bsky.social & @senatedemocrats.bsky.social leadership in the cheap seats - the POTUS painfully reminds almost every day he is a shockingly addled old man - functionally incapable of leading a neighborhood potluck, let alone this country.
Call it out, stop accepting it.
Trump lovingly holds up a picture himself with murderous dictator Putin someone (Putin?) sent him, says Putin wants to come to the World Cup.

A truly bizarre moment.

Q: Why would anyone come to this event here after all this guy has done?

🧵re: CDC shooting - feels trite to keep offering the “can you even imagine” takes - but can you even imagine the firestorm (& not just on Fox) if this were a Black shooter enraged over DOGE cuts & a white PO had been killed?
It’s stunning how much right wing depravity we’ve decided to just accept.
A terrorist targeted federal workers last week. There wasn’t much reporting on it. But I’m not finished thinking about it! 🧵

An anti-vaxxer fired more than 500 gunshots into CDC Atlanta, shattering 150 “blast-proof” windows on 6 buildings. Employees were pinned down in terror.

Any high ranking/influential Dems still on the fence about this need to get on side ASAP.
If you live in/represent a Blue State, want to gerrymander the FUCK out of your state, support and are willing to fight for a national anti-gerrymandering law you are principled, consistent and doing exactly the right thing.

While Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams trip over each other to win the approval of billionaires in backrooms, our campaign remains focused on working New Yorkers and their clear desire for a different kind of politics.

I wouldn’t say every Democrat running for office should frame the consequences of Republican governance this way, but…most of them should.

People are dying - with more tragedy still to come.

And if you think the GOP wouldn’t…man, I don’t know what to say - you weren’t made for this moment.
The flood should remind us -- as the Uvalde school shooting did -- that Republican governance is incompetent & leads to more people dying.

The fundamental question with which our country will have to grapple (or not, I suppose?) for decades.
How was Joe Biden forced out of a presidential race for a disastrous debate and for looking frail and for confusing names, but this man, one of the most ignorant men to ever be elected to any office, allowed to continue on as president and treated as a normal, serious leader??

Nothing but the deepest admiration for this incredibly brave woman (and increasingly more like her) who are standing up to Trump's & Miller's stormtroopers.

1. Zero thought of even considering a shout out to innocent Iranian civilians, who, of course, are subhuman, undeserving of their own sovereignty.
2. You’re the governor of Tennessee, literally no one cares what you think about war & geopolitics.
We barely care about your thoughts on Tennessee.
