Contributor: Science funding and immigration fuel America's innovation. They're at risk
The symbiotic relationship between the federal government and our universities — one that has delivered so much for America, its people and its economy — is now at risk.

Good points
Some thoughts on the CR/minibus.
1 The Dems negotiating with Rs were not freelancing. They coordinated with Sen Schumer. A few were ready to give in on day one, others worked to maximize appropriations wins.
Those voting for the 'deal' are the ones furthest away from electoral consequences.

The fundamental issue is that Democrats wants government programs to exist and work, and Republicans don’t. So, they are just not playing on a level field with the shut downs. They have very asymmetric preferences. Yes Schumer is weak but that is almost irrelevant.

Working the refs works. Just ask coach K or Donald Trump, who has worked the media so hard they simply can’t cover politics at all objectively. The government is fighting tooth and nail to deprive people of food. This is some dark, sick stuff.

We're closing on two months of one person single-handedly shuttering Congress. This is beyond absurd. No one should be able to do this.
Speaker Johnson is officially keeping the House in recess again next week. This will be the eighth consecutive week the House has been out of session. The chamber hasn't met since Sept. 19. Adelita Grijalva, who was elected on Sept. 23, has not been sworn in.

One time. The GOP has won more than 50% of the popular vote <one time> since 1992. And yet, every day, you are bombarded with Takes™️ from Ezra Douthglesias about how deeply unpopular The Democrats and their policy platform are, without any reflection on how the same standard applies to the GOP.
The Dems have won the popular vote in presidential elections six times since 1992 by roughly 5.5%(1992), 8.5%,(1996) .5%(2000), 7.3%(2008), 4%(2012), 2%(2016),and 4.5%(2020).
In that period the GOP presidential candidate has won the popular vote twice: 2.5%(2004) and 1.5%(2024).

Douthat writes that 2024, when Harris lost by 1.5% of the popular vote, was "an ideological referendum and progressivism lost." I wonder why he didn't view the 2020 election, when Trump lost by 4.5% of the popular vote, as a far more significant loss for conservatism.

Anonymous billionaires funding the army and the police should be a leading story in the US. It seems less than alarmist to say these are signs of oligarchy.
The nation’s largest police fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks is set to begin patrolling the streets of Las Vegas in November thanks to a donation from a U.S. tech billionaire, raising concerns about the blurring of lines between public and private interests.

The US is the purple line bottoming out. Our economy may still roar, but we’re killing ourselves. Hoarding wealth, refusing to even ensure our kids have enough to eat. That line is an indictment. It reflects our warped values.
This graph never fails to be shocking: "The US has experienced the earliest and greatest slowdown in life expectancy improvements among higher-income countries, reported Eileen Crimmins. “We have horrible life expectancy—and it’s getting worse and worse”"

Some of these gerrymanders are bound to backfire. If they could have safely maximized two additional seats why would they not have already done so? They are going to be slicing the salami too thin in some of these states.
