NEW BOOK! Killing Eve (Fall 2026, WSU Press)
I disliked books and had a virtual phobia of bookstores but then I read Michael Ondaatje’s Billy the Kid and everything changed. I hadn’t known you could do that with words. I was 22 or 23
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

teachers!

excited to share a new website at this late date of Aug 15 to try to help us collectively prepare for back to school in the interpretative humanities classroom assaulted by the AI grift, so we don't have to go it alone.

San Francisco had a similar law (1867) that existed alongside bans on cross-dressing, indecency, and carrying baskets on poles through the streets - a common practice among many Chinese workers. then, as now, the policing of poverty, disability, gender, sexuality, and immigration went hand-in-hand

this is a great thread and reminds me to recommit to buying books - academic and otherwise - where and when I can
Here's a long thread on an issue dear to my heart. This Tuesday evening I’m doing an Intellectual Publics with Macarena Gomez-Barris on publishing. Like last year’s conversation with Denise Cruz, or the prior year’s with Racquel Gates, we will talk about how to find a publisher, turn a thesis... 1/

We could just be reading great books, watching good movies, and eating fruit. Instead we have to survive/fight miserable power hoarders. What a waste of limited time.

i remember sobbing in the california state archives when i first read the hand-written notes of asylum doctors. i couldn't shake the feeling for days. no training, reading, or thinking that "i already knew" had prepared me for that. now i treat it like witnessing. awful, painful, and necessary too
Doing historical research isn’t just an intellectual enterprise; it’s emotional and embodied.

I legit almost threw up earlier this morning while researching etymology related to the year 1712.

If you’re a historian and/or do archival research, how do you handle the SHOCK of revelation?

Upset is correct! We can still vote NO on the obscene tentative agreement , which our chapter union leadership were not informed about when the agreement was announced. They terms are unacceptable. Press accounts have been misleading and inaccurate.
If you know any CSU faculty, you might know that though the strike ended, they are still rightfully pissed off . . .
