this is the only arrest i've heard about today
#NoKings event in Fairhope, Al.
A woman was arrested for "lewd conduct" because she was dressed in penis suit with a sign that said "No dick-tator"
3 cops on a 53 yo woman.

It is a scandal totally unprecedented in history that the Vice President has shared a video depicting the President as king. It’s an obscene violation of every founding American principle.

And nothing will come of it. It makes me physically sick.

Oh that is so sad. Swit brought such incredible depth to Margaret. If you have never seen M*A*S*H episode 'The Nurses' dig it out. It's probably the key turning point for the character, and her acting is sublime. I have never watched it without crying.

RIP Hot Lips.
Loretta Swit, who played ‘Hot Lips’ Houlihan on M*A*S*H, dies aged 87

Against this backdrop, what mileage is there for Labour to improve its ratings on handling immigration by a) signalling intent via concrete net migration targets and b) overseeing reductions in net migration?

Tomorrow there's a big White Paper on immigration (www.gov.uk/government/n...). Whatever else it does, it's bound to refuel Labour’s internal debate about net migration -- a debate full of assumptions about public opinion. Strap in for a long thread about a survey testing some of those assumptions.
Radical reforms to reduce migration
Britain's failed immigration system will be radically reformed so the system is controlled, managed and fair under a landmark White Paper.

Are you interested in social class? I've two working papers which show:

1️⃣ Using actor recordings of different accents, that people derive class from accent and this causally influences trait evaluations

2️⃣ That class-based descriptive representation improves support for the political system.

Is it impossible for English politicians to open their mouths without making half of the English electorate hate or despise them?

No, as it turns out. Unless they have a posh accent, in which case very much yes.

(For subtler analysis of our findings, see Dan's thread and the paper.)
With @robjohns75.bsky.social, we ask: do people infer class from accents? And does that matter for candidate evaluations?

The answer is yes and yes.

I doubt the makers of the new Bridget Jones movie intended Mark Darcy to serve as poignant metaphor for the passing of rules-based international order and dissolution of world that those of us who came of age in 1990s took for granted, but it kind of works on that level.
