It's been nearly two weeks since I managed any fic writing and it feels baaaad 😭 But I have been working on a new original story a little, around work. And I DID start my OFMD Lost AU before that, for something new to share 🫠
Trees. Sky. Sunlight, filtering down over Ed’s face in a—forest? A palm grove? Wherever the fuck he is, and—fuck, that hurts. Everything hurts. He tries to roll over; gets nowhere, just groans. Best he can tell, he’s been put through a fucking washer/dryer cycle, tossed in a machine until his bones have gone to jelly. Spat out in a palm grove, flat on his back, staring up at blue sky high, high above through the fronds. Everything hurts, and why the fuck is that washer/dryer still grinding away like that somewhere behind him? The sound is ringing in his ears, muffled but still sharp enough, a high whining whir that cycles on repeat, louder every time, and he finally manages to roll over and shove himself up on hands and knees. Whir, grind, hum, screech. Okay. He stares down at his fingers, where they’re sinking into the sand. He’s on sand. In a palm grove? Ribs creaking like he’s gone nine rounds in a ring and lost every one, like— Fuck. He can’t remember how he got here, and the panic jolts through him as he looks down at himself, sees his shirt all torn and dirty. Fuck, okay. He digs deeper as he tries to heft himself up, still comes up blank. Alien abduction. Fell through a portal. Time travel? Where the fuck was he before, why is this— He makes it up to a kneel, wheezing, squinting into the sun. All he knows is, the whirr-grind-hum of that background noise is starting to feel really fucking urgent, setting off an answering go go go in his chest. He makes it all the way up onto his feet, sways for a minute. Claps a hand on the nearest palm trunk, which is solid enough to scrape his hand. Feels real. Zings a little more panic into his veins, because this is not a dream, right? Whirrrrrr, grind, hum, screech. It’s not a dream. He takes a staggering step forward, and then another, shoving his way through the trees and heading for that noise. He stumbles out of the edge of the treeline and stops short as the nightmare unfolds in front of him, and he’s slapped with the instant memory of what just happened. The fucking plane, well. It’s not in the sky anymore, and neither is he.

“Fuck,” Ed rasps. “Fuck, mate, will you get over here? Need to tell you something.” The anxiety is pouring off of Stede in visible torrents. His face is pinched, and he’s standing too taut, too straight. He does as Ed asks and heads over to the couch, but he perches gingerly on the edge like he’s sitting on a bed of nails. He looks like Ed’s about to announce that he’s dying. Or that Ed’s about to break up with him. Or that Ed’s dying to break up with him. “Do something different with your face,” Ed demands, in a choked-up rush. “Please, mate. You look like a kicked cat.” Stede pants a terrified laugh. He does not do anything different with his face. It’s an echo of the other night, when Ed had demanded that Stede stop looking at him. Not a very nice echo, though. Stede’s still a ghastly shade of white, one that seems to be hedging into green territory. Fuck. Not good. Ed’s gotta just– He snatches frantically for a hand, and he feels the tremor of Stede’s bones against his own. He squeezes hard; hard as he fucking can without breaking anything. “Mate, I’m– I just– I like you, man. I really, really fucking like you, okay?” Stede does something different with his face. It’s a welcome change. His jaw releases. Colour seeps back into his cheeks. He lets free a sigh that sounds like it weighs more than a fucking Buick. “Oh,” he says, so relieved that it comes with the slight titter of a laugh. “That’s– Ed, that’s…not exactly news to me. I mean, I think we’ve already established–” “Might be a bit in love with you, even.”

Not new, but last year I wrote an entire insane strangers-to-lovers fic about somnophilia in the style of a scientific study, if you're into that sort of thing. They had to test just about every possibility (it's just good science, of course).

He doesn’t hesitate when they get to the door. Shoves it open with a bang, makes a quick assessment of the place—now why is that the hottest thing yet?—and then he’s got his hands hooked in the front of Ed’s overalls, spinning him around, shoving him back toward the potting table. Ed’s backside meets it with a thud, and Stede’s already crowding in to kiss him again, like he’s drunk on Ed and he’s desperate for more. One hand’s already at his buckles, working the button through, knuckles rubbing over Ed’s bare nipple underneath, and he’s squirming like crazy even before Stede manages to pop it open. Stands there for a second as the flap flops down, revealing half of Ed’s chest, and takes a long breath. “Fuck,” Stede says softly. A second later, he’s diving in to mouth ravenously at Ed’s nipple, and Ed tips his head back and lets out a strangled yelp. There are hands everywhere, like Stede’s just grown three extra ones, one minute squeezing his ass, the next minute sliding in through the back of his overalls to palm the hottest part of Ed. There’s one in his hair, one kneading his chest, and one working double-time to undo the other strap’s buckle, which— “Stop, stop,” Ed gasps, pushing Stede back a little. He comes up panting, red-lipped, wild-eyed. “Are you all right?” “Yep.” This is the best Ed’s felt in weeks, months, maybe ever? He wants to laugh, fuck, he is laughing, watching Stede’s lips twitch in a mirror of the insane joy he’s feeling. He wants to abandon all his plans right now and run away to China with Stede, not that he’s rushing anything. Nope. No, that can wait, that’s got room for getting to know each other a little better, like, you know, Stede actually knowing his real name. Anyway, getting to know each other better he can do. He slides a hand up the front of Stede’s dishevelled shirt, fingers the lapels gently. Says, as deep and dark as he can, “Thought it was my turn.”
