My job is to simulate alternate realities and report on their development. (I'm a sci-fi writer.) they/them

Want to read a fun sci-fi novel? Cool, so do I! Got any suggestions?

The only one I can think of is this one about an autistic programmer. The writing is pretty good, but the author hasn't posted a new chapter in FOREVER, even though I keep telling them to.

They never listen to me, though, smh smh

watching Americans try to park their enormous SUVs front-in in a crowded parking lot is like watching a bunch of toddlers playing with building blocks, only they're all adults and they can't figure out why the stacks keep falling over

smartphone makers could include a tiny heating coil around the edge of the screen, to apply exactly the right amount of heat to loosen the adhesive and allow the device to be opened safely and cleanly, but that would be against their economic interests

Ok palate cleanse time. In case you missed it, here's my most popular post ever
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

So gather around children, for this is the tale of The Rice Truck Saga

I *did* expect the reaction I've gotten to the idea: "that'll never work, people just aren't that altruistic"

I didn't consider that'd activate my oppositional defiance. now I have the vindictive urge to make my mutual aid site a roaring success that changes the online landscape, just out of spite
continuing to have thoughts, this time around monetization. part of the onboarding interview asks you to figure out your "splurge limit":

You're about to go to an annual gathering, maybe a convention or expo. You may want to buy souvenirs, but they only take cash. How much cash do you bring?
getting more ideas around this. would want each user to declare a position on socioeconomic spectrum, I think (unsure whether public or private; public probably healthier for society, private easier to get ppl to declare)

concept: a crowdfunding mutual aid site based around pooling resources and distributing them to where they'll have the most effect, rather than to whoever is best at social networking

out of scope for thread: operating costs, monetization, bot/dupe filtering (assume exactly 1 acct per human user)

This is fascinating, though I wish they'd done an additional experimental modality where the additional experimenter dressed as, say, a gorilla - something else unexpected but with no superhero connotations

but still cool!!

We're in a bad legal / moral space where it's possible for things to expect to be treated as persons (e.g. corporations having speech rights) and yet be protected (by their insubstantiality) from the punishment, censure, and consequences humans face

I'm not against the idea that some sort of silicon intelligence *might* arise at some point--we're not even nearly there as far as I can tell--but humans are SO programmed to regard things that do not have human agency as if they do have human agency, that this seems like a necessary move
my most butlerian jihad coded belief is that we should probably make it illegal – and more importantly, we should work toward a cultural consensus that it is immoral – to design a computer program whose interface uses the first person

You need to believe that everything someone says might have truth in it. Even and especially your enemies, because otherwise you leave yourself open to them using your reaction to discredit you to their allies, just by telling you something true but misleading or unbelievable.

Talked about it in my office. Other 2 women said it never happened to them. ???
Guy said his wife was a flight attendant and never had a problem. I told him to ask her again. Next day he confided in me that he asked again and she just started crying.

People like to act like in being opposed to the concept of blocking I'm opposed to personal safety online.

I'm not. I just think that when the systems in place offer one and only one tool for your protection and say "just use this whenever you're uncomfortable", that MAYBE this isn't the best idea

it'd be so much fun to debate someone with different views from mine, under rules I found acceptable and fair.

unfortunately rules aren't particularly in vogue these days, and neither is fairness, but it's still a pleasant fantasy.

hey, remember when I said "there is never a time when blocking after you reply is okay" and that famous Internet person said "how dare you say that blocking can hurt someone"

well guess what, someone used that to harass me and it triggered a PTSD flashback

so what I'm saying is, fuck you rah

this is why I get so fed up with people who think we can fix the system. the whole POINT of the system was to find a way to strip the humanity from people. we don't need to file the sharp edges off our torture machine, we need to destroy it.

follow these three steps and you'll understand why.
