I disagree; both Batman and Joker put people in mind of "justice". since their primary conclusion was "an unexpected event causes people to be more compassionate" and not "a superhero costume causes…", I'd have liked to see an unexpected event without any connection to justice/empathy.

now the only truly difficult part: coming up with a name 🥴

I *did* expect the reaction I've gotten to the idea: "that'll never work, people just aren't that altruistic"

I didn't consider that'd activate my oppositional defiance. now I have the vindictive urge to make my mutual aid site a roaring success that changes the online landscape, just out of spite
continuing to have thoughts, this time around monetization. part of the onboarding interview asks you to figure out your "splurge limit":

You're about to go to an annual gathering, maybe a convention or expo. You may want to buy souvenirs, but they only take cash. How much cash do you bring?

getting more ideas around this. would want each user to declare a position on socioeconomic spectrum, I think (unsure whether public or private; public probably healthier for society, private easier to get ppl to declare)

concept: a crowdfunding mutual aid site based around pooling resources and distributing them to where they'll have the most effect, rather than to whoever is best at social networking

out of scope for thread: operating costs, monetization, bot/dupe filtering (assume exactly 1 acct per human user)

This is the concept behind the idea I've been workshopping on my feed lately. what if we just made it REALLY EASY to give money to people who need it, for no other reason than just because they asked?

the angel fund also works as a cushion for the system itself; if there are sudden unbudgeted expenses that would threaten the stability of the system (legal expenses, for example) the angel fund could be drawn from, taking a percentage out of each individual acct (and apologizing profusely to users)
November 21, 2025 at 6:32 PM
you can also set conditions when your angel funds will automatically get sent to someone in need, like for example "life-saving aid requests that are either community-approved or under $300"
November 21, 2025 at 6:30 PM
perhaps something like 25% of your membership fee goes into your "angel account", capped at 10× your splurge limit. at any point, you can use the funds in your angel account to fulfill someone else's aid request.
November 21, 2025 at 6:26 PM
typically, you won't even see aid requests that are above your splurge limit. the goal is to focus users on things they *can* change, not things they can't.
November 21, 2025 at 6:23 PM
your SL is part of what determines where you are on the SE spectrum, and it also determines your membership fee: 10% of your splurge limit, per month.

part of membership fee goes towards keeping the servers running, part of it goes to fulfill aid requests that have been unfilled for a long time.
