Oh my god that’s exactly what all this “de-extinction” stuff is. It’s way sexier and more scifi to pretend like we can bring back mammoths (we can’t) than actual wildlife conservation, which is a lot of unsexy hard work but actually gets results.
It has a lot of parallels to the fix the environment vs colonize mars discourse

I can’t stop thinking about this framing when it comes to climate. And I don’t mean “doom” as in “I feel badly about this situation,” but as in “it’s too late.” Someone responded to my post about the impact of climate activism yesterday calling it hopium. Two people who follow me liked it.
