NEW: Income isn’t supposed to play a role in how much housing assistance FEMA gives families.

But in some North Carolina counties, the highest-income homeowners received two to three times as much money after Hurricane Helene as those with lower incomes.

Arduous and Unequal: The Fight to Get FEMA Housing Assistance After Helene
An analysis by ProPublica and The Assembly of the more rural counties in North Carolina hardest hit by Helene shows that the households that got the most aid tended to have the highest incomes.

Recently moved in with my elderly father-in-law to look after him. And I just need to know; why are old men so gross?? Take every gross habit younger men have, multiply it by 10 and add an attitude of superiority and defiance about said gross habits.

I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)

More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...
Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees drop off the grid after leaving site
As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald.

I am sickened by the relentless demonisation of refugees.

No refugee underfunded a school.

No refugee closed a hospital.

No refugee took away support from the sick and disabled.

We need solutions not scapegoats. Stop blaming refugees and tax the rich instead!

She showed up as the main guest at a ribbon-cutting in Searsport, Maine. It backfired.

ICE agents are not wearing ‘masks’.

They’re face coverings. Bandanas. Gaiters.

Masks are a public health tool. They’re a form of both resistance and community care.

ICE agents wear them to terrorize people & hide their identity.

The rest of us wear masks to protect one another.

I like to use the phrase "early pandemic" to establish the expectation of when the timeline had everyone staying home or at least social distancing and actually following the (imperfect and inadequate) public health recommendations we were getting at the time.
I will die on this hill:

it isn’t hard to say “at the height of the pandemic” or “at the start of COVID” during a podcast interview. Producers, hosts, don’t let your guests say “during COVID” like this thing is over. Correct them. Ask them to say the sentence again. This is your job.

If you’re sick right now, please test for Covid. Stay home if it’s at all possible, and wear a mask. Ideally an N95.

It’s not over. It was never over.

No one is coming to save us so we must save each other.

One of the best ways to do that is to commit to breaking chains of transmission!
