Proud community college educator based in Maryland. EdD student with a passion for information literacy and social justice. Warren Democrat. YIMBY. Anti-GenAI. She/her/bi. ♌️♋️♍️ Posts do not represent my employer.
I remember listening to a TED Talk from Galloway on the housing crisis and other cost-of-living challenges that Millennials in particular are facing, and I really appreciated his insight. As I learned more about him, though, I got an undeniable manosphere vibe.

“The math is brutal and the juxtaposition stark: millions for OpenAI while pink slips go out to longtime lecturers. The CSU isn’t investing in education—it’s outsourcing it, paying premium prices for a chatbot many students were already using for free.“

AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself
Students use AI to write papers, professors use AI to grade them, degrees become meaningless, and tech companies make fortunes. Welcome to the death of higher education.

Every ai booster believes that college is about doing homework. They think there’s a homework goblin that pays the colleges for their homework. Their dream is that they can have a machine that you can pay $75,000 to and receive a college degree from in four years.

Yesterday was my husband's inauguration: four more years as a City of Annapolis alderman! Yesterday was also yet another day I failed to meet Senator Alsobrooks as a human being instead of as a crab mascot. This woman ONLY knows me as a giant red crab and the longer this goes on the funnier it gets.

I've never done this. Throughout the years, I've found that if you give students enough examples of both strong and weak thesis statements (so that they also know what *not* to do), you eliminate the need to spoonfeed them "x, y, and z" formulas.
Thinking of banning list-of-three-things thesis statements.

As someone with a friend whose sweet mother has early-onset dementia, I really hate the “Dementia Don” jokes about Trump. I know he’s failing mentally — all the signs are there — but there are ways to point this out without punching down at everyday people affected by something so difficult.

It will be interesting to see if more counties making community college free for dually enrolled high school students (Maryland counties started this last year) helps bump up enrollment more long term.
Community college enrollment has been declining since 2009/10. The optimal policy response to this depends on the root of this decline.

I'm thrilled @nber.org today released my working paper with Harvard PhD Joe Winkelmann titled:

"Labor Market Strength and Declining Community College Enrollment"

It has to be the most American thing ever to swarm this woman’s replies yelling about American politics when she’s a Brit talking specifically about political parties in the UK. Jesus.
There is an extraordinary sense of entitlement behind the belief that there ought to be political party that aligns 100% with your own opinions.

I think it’s especially depressing after all those Thanksgiving commercials foisting AI upon us. Lie to your child with AI. Make a shitty recipe with AI. “Create” a dead-eyed cartoon of yourself instead of meaningful and original art. Nothing matters.
Enshittification is depressing

Everything that was cool is struggling to survive or has become a deranged version of itself

And it’s everywhere. Ugh

All these edtech and AIed testbeds don't follow the evidence-based "what works" policy model that's dominated education for years. They're *making* AI work in real-world school settings to generate insights for policy and tech. Schools are AI testing labs now.

A reminder for those who are not aware: "remigration" is the process of deporting all non-white people from a country. It includes citizens and is, by definition, ethnic cleansing.

And to be clear: this is not fake. I just screenshot it myself.
