Super simple… nowadays, but in ‘84 would’ve involved projecting a frame of the film in a roto rig, tracing the year, painting a precise matte of it, filming the matte then using it to comp on top of the passing car with an earlier bit of the footage in an optical printer.
I've watched this brilliant gag from Johnny Dangerously a hundred times and I cannot figure out how they did it.
