people who say “why do we need [fine arts, humanities degrees, mid-budget films] when they don’t make a ton of money?” are insufferable. why do we need chrysanthemums? why do we need bonfires or baleen whales or the color blue? we just do. we just do.

I recommend no fewer than 4 copies of any beloved book. A paperback for traveling and lending to friends, an eBook for reading with greasy snack fingers, an audio book so you know how the characters' names are actually pronounced, and a pristine hardcover to be buried with you like a pharaoh

Note to self - at lunchtime, avoid people who are clearly struggling with sinus and cold symptoms while you are trying to eat your yougurt

I will remind everyone today that Great Wealth is the source of Great Poverty.

There is only so much money to go around and when someone steals millions of times more than they need.

Millions must go without because of one, who doesn't even spend it.

My son has a musical performance tonight. Me being me, I waited until this morning to read last week's newsletter, which has suggestions for costumes.

Anyway, that's why I'm now panic crafting the most abominable cut-out snowflakes in the history of panic crafting.

I will learn nothing from this.

Brilliant Saturday night out at Scarborough Spa - as usual, The Blow Monkeys were magical tonight - so brilliant, and so cool. The audience were lapping it up and everyone on the way out was saying what a great show it was. Roll on the next time!

Tonight was the Blow Monkeys. They were great... and then they brought out one of the best Doctor Whos.

Apparently people knew beforehand, I didn't.

There's a new craze in bookshops around the UK...

...namely placing Boris Johnson's new memoir next to other books on lying and/or Brexit damage - or even alongside toilet paper and cat litter...
