Their rich friends and donors love this idea because it lets them save more on taxes since they make way too much for healthcare subsidies. Ordinary folks don't have enough extra cash or high enough tax rates for it to help.

Yes, and one of the arguments for the ACA is that it would enable people to start businesses because they wouldn’t be chained to a job and its health insurance. Cassidy’s plan is anti-entrepreneurial, pro job lock.

And ACA enrollees can ALREADY put money into HSAs to pay for medical expenses, so unless they’re talking about increasing the limit or allowing them to be used for premiums I don’t understand what this would mean. And again, that’s useless for lower-income households who don’t have $ to set aside.

5) Dems showed (a) it's possible to get something out of "shutting down the government" despite what the pundits said, and (b) that they could hold together for 40 days. It's not a policy win, but it changes expectations for what they can do in the future, strengthening their negotiating position.

California has a separate state-based subsidy program which is being expanded in 2026, but it’s only relevant to enrollees who earn less than 165% of the poverty line. I’ve written about that as well.
